Mortiis is a Norwegian musical project originally conceived as a solo endeavor by former Emperor bassist Håvard Ellefsen, also known as Mortiis. Emerging in the early 1990s, the project has evolved from its roots in dark ambient and dungeon synth to incorporate elements of industrial rock, neoclassical darkwave, and black metal. Over time, Mortiis transitioned into a full band setup, expanding its sound and live performance dynamic. Known for its theatrical and often eerie atmosphere, Mortiis has traversed various musical landscapes, continuously reinventing itself while maintaining a dark, immersive core.

Mortiis's sound is characterized by its haunting, atmospheric textures and dark, cinematic quality. The project frequently utilizes a blend of synth-driven melodies and aggressive industrial beats, creating a sonic landscape that's both expansive and intense. Synthesizers like the Roland JP-8080, Roland JV-2080, and Clavia Nord Rack 2 are instrumental in shaping the project's otherworldly soundscapes, offering a rich palette of tones ranging from ethereal to menacing. The incorporation of effects pedals, such as the ZVEX Vexter Series Fuzz Factory and Moog Moogerfooger MF-102 Ring Modulator, adds layers of grit and texture, amplifying the project's raw, visceral edge. This combination of elements results in a sound that is both melodic and abrasive, inviting listeners into a world that is as enchanting as it is unsettling.
