About
Nektar is a progressive rock band formed in 1969 in Hamburg, Germany, by a group of English musicians. The original lineup included Roye Albrighton (guitar, vocals), Allan Freeman (keyboards, vocals), Derek "Mo" Moore (bass, Mellotron, vocals), and Ron Howden (drums). Known for their fusion of art rock, space rock, and psychedelic rock, Nektar's sound often draws comparisons to the likes of Pink Floyd and Yes. Their music is characterized by extended compositions and thematic development, particularly evident in albums like Journey to the Centre of the Eye and A Tab in the Ocean. The band's unique blend of rock and experimental sounds, complemented by elaborate live light shows, secured them a cult following through the 1970s.
How to Sound Like Nektar
Nektar's sonic character is a rich tapestry of lush, ambient textures and expansive, melodic progressions. Their sound is both ethereal and grounded, utilizing a combination of organic instrumentation and synth-driven atmospheres. The use of keyboards and synths like the Moog Minimoog Model D and the Oberheim Xpander helps create their otherworldly soundscapes. The guitar work is often layered with effects, providing a cosmic, swirling quality that transports listeners into vast, sonic journeys. Phaser effects, such as those achieved with the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, add to the sense of movement and space. The rhythmic foundation laid by the bass and drums is intricate yet solid, allowing the music to explore complex structures without losing its groove. This combination of elements makes Nektar's music both a cerebral and emotive experience, appealing to fans of progressive and experimental rock.
