About

Outlaws is a prominent American band that emerged from the Southern rock scene, blending elements of rock, blues rock, country rock, and heartland rock. Founded in Tampa, Florida, in 1972, the group was originally formed by Hughie Thomasson (vocals, guitar), Henry Paul (vocals, guitar), Frank O'Keefe (bass), and Monte Yoho (drums). The addition of guitarist Billy Jones in 1973 completed their early lineup. Known for their intricate guitar interplay reminiscent of bands like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws also incorporated the smooth harmonies and melodic sensibilities of acts like the Eagles. Their self-titled debut album released in 1975 brought them into the limelight with hits like "There Goes Another Love Song" and "Green Grass & High Tides."

How to Sound Like Outlaws

The Outlaws' sound is characterized by energetic guitar duels and melodic harmonies, creating a rich sonic tapestry that is both dynamic and soulful. Their music often balances crisp, clean guitar tones with the raw, edge-of-your-seat intensity typical of Southern rock. To replicate their sound, a musician might consider using a Fender Stratocaster, favored by Hughie Thomasson, which offers the bright and articulate tones necessary for the band's intricate solos and rhythm work. Amplifiers like the Fender Super Twin are integral to achieving their powerful yet clear sound, providing the necessary headroom and tonal clarity to cut through dense mixes. The interplay of these elements results in a sound that is at once nostalgic and timeless, capturing the spirit of classic Southern rock with a unique flair.
