Hughie Thomasson
Hughie Thomasson's Gear
Thomasson still has his 1972 three-bolt Fender Stratocaster, and noted “Ron Nevison, who produced the Ghost Riders record for us, suggested that I use that guitar only in the studio, which I did for a bunch of years. But I’m using it live again; it wants to be played – it doesn’t need to be sitting in a case in a closet!”
At that time Hugh was using an old black Tele with a b bender going into 2 old Peavey Duece 2/12 combos on top of 2 other Peavey speaker cabs.. the old black ones with the aluminum running down each side edge of the grill cloth.
Hughie: “I’m playing through a blackface Fender Super Twin with a Marshall cabinet…. The Fender has clarity and it doesn’t distort much at high volume. I need that nice clean tone at a loud volume, and that’s what the Twin gives to me. It’s also 180 watts. It’s one of the old ones. It was like God said it was okay to play through this.”
He uses Dunlop Tortex .60 gauge picks, and that's important because he has such a light touch with his right hand. His fretting hand is very strong, but he makes it look effortless and does a lot of sweep picking and economy picking when he's playing. That's a lot of his tone right there. From tdpri forum
Hughie Thomasson used a Fender Telecaster equipped with a B-Bender during the Los Hombres Malo and Soldiers of Fortune tours, as seen in the YouTube video "The Outlaws - Green Grass & High Tides" by Ernesto VPV.
