About
Powermad is an American metal band hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, known for their intense blend of thrash metal, speed metal, and power thrash. Formed in 1984, the group originally consisted of Joel DuBay (vocals, guitar), Bill Hill (guitar), Adrian Liberty (drums), and Jeff Litke (bass). After Bill Hill's departure, guitarist Todd Haug joined the lineup, solidifying the band's core. Powermad's sound is a thrilling mix of neck-snapping riffs and soaring melodies inspired by the NWOBHM, drawing comparisons to iconic acts like Anthrax and Iron Maiden. Their debut album, Absolute Power, released in 1989, is revered within the metal community and helped establish their legacy as cult favorites.
How to Sound Like Powermad
Powermad's music is characterized by aggressive, high-octane riffs and soaring melodic lines, creating a dynamic tension between speed and melody. Their guitar work often features tight, palm-muted riffs interspersed with intricate solos, achieved with powerful amplifiers and a precise picking technique. The use of pedals like the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal might help achieve their razor-sharp guitar tones. On drums, the use of the Tama Starclassic (Maple) by Dirk Verbeuren provides a thunderous and articulate foundation, complemented by Meinl Byzance cymbals for a crisp, cutting attack. This combination of gear and technique results in a sound that is both relentless and melodic, capturing the essence of their powerful thrash metal roots.
