About

Rocket Juice & the Moon is an eclectic supergroup that fuses elements of jazz, funk, instrumental, Afrobeat, world fusion, and azonto to create a dynamic and globally influenced sound. Formed by a chance meeting on a plane in 2008, the group consists of Damon Albarn (vocals, keyboards), Tony Allen (drums), and Flea (bass). Albarn, renowned for his work with Blur and Gorillaz, brings his eclectic sensibility to the group's adventurous compositions. Allen, a legendary figure in Afrobeat, provides intricate and propulsive rhythms, while Flea, the dynamic bassist from Red Hot Chili Peppers, infuses tracks with his signature funk-driven style. Together, they craft a sound that is both exploratory and rooted in rich musical traditions.

How to Sound Like Rocket Juice & the Moon

Rocket Juice & the Moon's sound is characterized by a vibrant, groove-laden texture that melds the fluidity of jazz with the syncopation of Afrobeat. The interplay of Flea's robust bass lines, often delivered through a Music Man Stingray and amplified by gear like the Mesa/Boogie 2x15 Road Ready Bass Cabinet, lays a powerful foundation of funk and rhythm. Albarn's melodic keyboard work, sometimes utilizing the versatile Teenage Engineering OP-1 Portable Synthesizer, adds an ethereal layer to the ensemble, often crafting ambient textures that float above the grooves. Meanwhile, Allen’s drumming, played on a Pearl Masters Studio, injects a complex and textured rhythmic vitality, making use of intricate patterns and syncopations that dance around the bass and keys. The group's music thrives in its ability to blend diverse cultural sounds into a cohesive and exhilarating auditory experience.
