About

Smoke or Fire is an American punk band known for their high-energy blend of skate punk, melodic hardcore, and punk rock. Originally formed in Boston in 1998 under the name Jericho, the band consists of Joe McMahan (lead vocals, guitar), Jeremy Cochran (guitar), Ken Gurley (bass), and David Atchison (drums), who replaced original drummer Nick Maggiore. Smoke or Fire relocated to Richmond, VA, where they solidified their lineup and sound, eventually signing with Fat Wreck Chords. With albums like Above the City and This Sinking Ship, they have made a significant mark in the punk scene, delivering music that is both emotionally charged and rhythmically intense.

How to Sound Like Smoke or Fire

To capture the sound of Smoke or Fire, musicians should focus on achieving a raw, aggressive sonic character that is both melodic and driving. The band’s music is characterized by fast-paced guitar riffs and powerful, overdriven tones, often achieved through the use of tube amps and distortion pedals. Their guitar work combines crunchy chords with melodic leads, making use of tight rhythmic precision. Bass lines are punchy and lock in tightly with the high-energy drum patterns, which are typically straightforward but delivered with intensity and speed. To emulate their sound, focus on maintaining a balanced mix of melody and aggression, ensuring that the emotional weight of the lyrics is matched by the dynamic and forceful instrumentation.
