About

The Adverts were a seminal English punk rock band known for their raw energy and influence in the late 1970s. Hailing from London, the group consisted of T.V. Smith (vocals), Gaye Advert (bass), Howard Pickup (guitar), and Laurie Driver (drums). They quickly rose to prominence with their debut single "One Chord Wonders" and the controversial hit "Gary Gilmore's Eyes," both of which established their reputation for crafting sharp, socially conscious lyrics. Drawing from genres like punk, post-punk, and proto-punk, The Adverts left a lasting mark on the punk scene despite their brief existence.

How to Sound Like The Adverts

The Adverts' sound was characterized by its aggressive, stripped-down punk ethos, delivering punchy, high-energy performances with a sense of raw, unpolished urgency. Gaye Advert's bass work provided a driving force, often utilizing the Rickenbacker 4001 and Gibson EB-0 to create a thick, resonant undertone. Howard Pickup's guitar played a crucial role in their gritty sound, often employing the Gibson SG Standard to deliver sharp, cutting riffs that underscored the band's raw energy. Their music often carried a sense of urgency and defiance, driven by relentless rhythms and a straightforward, no-frills approach to songwriting.
