About
The International Submarine Band was a pioneering American group formed in the mid-1960s, known for their groundbreaking fusion of country and rock music, a genre later coined as "cosmic American music" by their iconic frontman Gram Parsons. Originating while Parsons was studying at Harvard, the band included John Nuese (guitar), Ian Dunlop (bass), and Mickey Gauvin (drums). Despite their brief existence and limited commercial success, their 1968 album Safe at Home is celebrated for its influential role in the development of country rock.
How to Sound Like The International Submarine Band
The International Submarine Band's sound is characterized by a rich blend of country twang and rock rhythms, creating a warm, earthy vibe. This sonic fusion is enhanced by the use of steel-string acoustic guitars, such as the Epiphone FT-110 Frontier and Gibson J-200, which deliver resonant, melodic lines with a rustic charm. The inclusion of the Fender Telecaster adds a crisp, electric edge, bridging traditional country sounds with rock's energetic drive. The band's arrangements often feature mellow, yet dynamic drumming, creating a rhythmic foundation that complements the harmonious interplay of guitars, allowing their music to soar with both emotional depth and vibrant energy.
