About
The New Amsterdams is an American indie rock band with deep roots in the emo and acoustic rock scenes. Originating from Lawrence, Kansas, the group was founded by Matthew Pryor (vocals, guitar), best known as the frontman for The Get Up Kids. The band also features Jake Cardwell (drums), Alex Brahl (guitar), and Robert Pope (bass). Over time, members like Ryan Pope and others have contributed to the band's evolving sound. Known for their introspective lyrics and melodic compositions, The New Amsterdams provide a more acoustic and stripped-down contrast to the energetic punk of Pryor's primary band, blending elements of emo punk with indie sensibilities.
How to Sound Like The New Amsterdams
The New Amsterdams' sound is characterized by warm, organic acoustic textures and emotionally resonant melodies. Their music often leans on acoustic guitars like the Gibson J-45 to deliver its heartfelt, grainy acoustics. Electric guitars such as the Fender Telecaster and Gibson ES-335 add subtle layers of texture and depth, supporting Pryor's poignant vocal delivery. The bass lines, often played using a Fender American Vintage '63 Precision Bass, provide a melodic counterpoint that anchors the band's sound. The rhythm section, featuring the C&C Custom Drum Kit played by Ryan Pope, maintains a laid-back yet dynamic foundation, allowing for expressive, storytelling lyrics to take center stage. This blend of acoustic warmth, melodic electric layers, and introspective lyrics creates a sound that is both intimate and expansive, appealing to fans of emo and indie rock alike.
