About

VHS or Beta is an eclectic American band hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, known for their fusion of rock, alternative dance, electroclash, and new rave. Formed in 1997 by Mark Palgy (bass), Zeke Buck (guitar), and Craig Pfunder (guitar), the group originally explored noise punk before evolving their sound with the addition of Mark Guidry (drums). Their music incorporates elements of house, soul, and disco, often enhanced by keyboards, vocoder, samples, and electronic drums. After Zeke Buck's departure in 2006, the band continued as a duo consisting of Pfunder and Palgy, later enlisting Jim Orso (drums) for live performances and subsequent recordings. Their discography includes notable albums like Le Funk, Night on Fire, and Bring on the Comets.

How to Sound Like VHS or Beta

VHS or Beta's sound is characterized by an energetic blend of danceable rock rhythms and electronic textures. Their music features crisp, rhythmic guitar lines that are often layered with synthesized melodies and driving basslines, creating an infectious groove. The use of vocoder and samples adds an electronic sheen to their tracks, while electronic drums and traditional percussion deliver a pulsating beat that invites movement. To emulate their style, musicians might focus on combining analog synths and digital samplers with overdriven guitar tones. The production often employs tight, punchy mixing to ensure each element is distinct yet cohesive, allowing for a dynamic and immersive listening experience.
