About
Windir was a Norwegian metal band that emerged from the Sogndal region, known for their unique fusion of black metal, folk metal, and Viking metal. Founded in 1994 by the visionary Terje "Valfar" Bakken (vocals, multi-instrumentalist), Windir initially started as a solo project before expanding into a full band. The lineup eventually included Steingrim (drums), Strom and Sture (guitars), Righ (keyboards), and Hvàll (bass), with clean vocals contributed by Steinarson and later Cosmocrator. Windir's music often drew from Scandinavian folklore and the local Sognamål dialect, creating a rich tapestry that celebrated regional history and mythology through a metal lens.
How to Sound Like Windir
Windir’s sound is characterized by an aggressive yet melodic blend that merges the intensity of black metal with the haunting melodies and instruments of folk traditions. Their compositions often feature fast, tremolo-picked guitar riffs that intertwine with synth-driven atmospheres, crafting an epic, cinematic soundscape. The use of solid body electric guitars, like the Jackson Dinky Reverse and ESP LTD EC Series EC-1000 Electric Guitar, contributes to their sharp and dynamic tonal attack. The drumming is relentless and precise, propelling the music with a thunderous, primal energy, while the keyboards provide a sweeping, symphonic backdrop that enhances the thematic storytelling. This intricate layering gives Windir’s music a dramatic, immersive feel that transports listeners to the mystical realms of Norse legend.
