About
Gehenna is a seminal Norwegian black metal band hailing from Stavanger, formed in January 1993. The group was originally comprised of Sanrabb (vocals, guitar), Dolgar (guitar, bass), and Sir Vereda (drums), with later additions including Svartalv (bass), Sarcana (keyboards), and Dirge Rep (drums). Known for their unique blend of black metal, symphonic black metal, and dark pagan themes, Gehenna emerged during the rise of the Norwegian black metal scene, aligning with the raw aggression and atmospheric depth that characterized their contemporaries like Mayhem and Emperor. Their early work, such as the First Spell mini-album, is celebrated for its somber, melodic approach, securing their place in the pantheon of black metal.
How to Sound Like Gehenna
Gehenna's sound is marked by a dark, atmospheric intensity, combining the raw, aggressive edge of traditional black metal with melodic, symphonic elements. This sonic character is achieved through the use of distorted, reverb-laden guitar tones that create a haunting backdrop, while the keyboards add an eerie, orchestral layer. The drum work, featuring thundering double bass and intricate cymbal work, adds to the oppressive yet immersive feel of their music. For drummers aiming to replicate Gehenna’s percussive force, the Tama Starclassic Bubinga and Zildjian 18" K Dark Crash Thin are key components. Gehenna's music thrives on a balance between ferocity and melancholic melody, creating a dynamic and evocative listening experience.
