In various live videos and photos, you can see Manuela playing not a Fender Stratocaster but a Westminster branded Strat Copy made in Japan. This was apparently given to her by a friend when they started the band. It appears to have been modified by this person as two pickups appear to be replaced (may have just replaced the pickup covers however). She uses the Bridge pickup almost exclusively (some photos you can see sometimes the guitar is set to other pickups).

The fundamental aspect of Manuela's guitar sound was the use of a Burman Amps Pro 501 Combo amp. These are a high gain single chain valve amp with an active mid range control allowing for wide mid frequency sculpting. This accounts for her high saturation and grinding almost comb filtered sound. It can be seen in the background of many performances and photos.

After being asked on a Xmal Facebook Group, David Wolfenden from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (who toured with Xmal and were friends of the band) confirmed Manuela used a Boss BF-2 Flanger on her guitar. Unfortunately no footage or photos of it have been found.
