Founded by luthier Bill Collings, who began building guitars on his kitchen table in Houston, Texas in the mid-1970s, Collings Guitars is an Austin, Texas-based manufacturer of handmade acoustic guitars, electric guitars, archtop guitars, and mandolins. After relocating to Austin and gaining national exposure through a commission of 24 custom guitars for Nashville's Gruhn Guitars, Collings grew from a one-man shop into a facility of over 80 luthiers producing some of the most sought-after fretted instruments in the world.
The acoustic lineup includes the D Series dreadnoughts, OM Series orchestra models, CJ and SJ jumbo models, parlor-sized C10 Series, and various 12-fret designs. Electric models — introduced in 2006 — include the City Limits (CL), I-35 semi-hollow, 360, 290, and SoCo Deluxe. Collings also produces A-style and F-style mandolins and the Waterloo line of vintage-inspired guitars designed to capture the feel and tone of depression-era instruments.
Collings instruments have been played by a wide range of artists including Lyle Lovett, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Joni Mitchell, Brian May, Julian Lage, Jeff Tweedy, Andy Summers, Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers, Tyler Childers, Marcus Mumford, and Prince. The brand has a strong reputation among discerning players for meticulous craftsmanship, tonal consistency, and build quality across all of its product lines.
Collings has 100 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Steel-string Acoustic Guitars, Solid Body Electric Guitars, and Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 89 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Pop. Notable users include Zac Brown, Ray LaMontagne, and Anthony Da Costa. Most Collings products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
