Larrivée is a Canadian acoustic and electric guitar maker founded in Toronto in 1967 by luthier Jean-Claude Larrivée, who apprenticed under German-born classical guitar builder Edgar Mönch before striking out on his own. After starting with classical instruments, Larrivée began producing steel-string acoustics in the early 1970s, developing the distinctive symmetrical L-body shape derived from classical guitar proportions. The company relocated from Toronto to Victoria, British Columbia in 1977, then to Vancouver in 1982, and opened a second factory in Oxnard, California in 2001.
The lineup is organized into numbered series running from the entry-level 03 Series up through the Legacy 40 Series, with body shapes including the Dreadnought (D), Orchestra Model (OM), Parlor (P), 000, and the signature L body. The D-03, introduced in 1997 as one of the first solid-wood North American acoustics at an accessible price point, became a cornerstone of the catalog alongside models like the OM-03 and higher-tier rosewood instruments. Larrivée also builds a line of solid-body electric guitars with proprietary pickups, and offers a C-03 Tommy Emmanuel signature model.
The guitars are known for symmetrical parabolic bracing, all-solid-wood construction, and a clear, balanced voice favored by fingerstyle and singer-songwriter players. Artists associated with the brand include Bruce Cockburn, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, and Tommy Emmanuel; astronaut Chris Hadfield famously played a Larrivée parlor guitar aboard the International Space Station for his cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity."
