Gon Bops is a Latin percussion manufacturer founded in 1954 by Mariano Bobadilla, a Mexican-American builder working out of a wooden garage in downtown Los Angeles. Bobadilla, a band instrument repairman and trumpet player, became one of the most respected conga makers in the industry, credited with designing the first teardrop crown with rounded counter hoops to protect players' hands and developing the first tunable hardware for congas and bongos in the United States. Through the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, Gon Bops instruments were favored by players including Mongo Santamaria, Armando Peraza, Francisco Aguabella, and Alex Acuña.
The company's product line centers on hand percussion — congas, bongos, timbales, cajons, bells, blocks, shakers, and accessories — across signature, Mariano, Alex Acuña, California, and Tumbao series. Drum Workshop (DW) acquired the brand and its patents in 2001, and SABIAN Inc. took over the inventory, intellectual property, and manufacturing equipment in 2010, continuing production under the Gon Bops name.
