Fryer Guitars is a small-scale custom guitar, pickup, pedal, and amplifier workshop founded by luthier Greg Fryer in Brookvale, Sydney, Australia. Fryer began repairing and modifying guitars in the late 1970s and established the Fryer brand in 1988, initially doing repair and custom build work for Australian artists including Ian Moss of Cold Chisel. The operation remains largely a one-man shop focused on hand-built work rather than mass production.
The brand is best known for its long association with Queen guitarist Brian May. Fryer built three Red Special replicas — nicknamed John, Paul, and George Burns — for May in 1996–1997, and carried out the 1998 restoration of May's original Red Special. That work led to an ongoing line of Red Special replica guitars, Burns Trisonic-style pickups, Deacy amp replicas, and modified Vox AC30 amplifiers.
Fryer's pedal catalog centers on treble boosters in the tradition of the Rangemaster-style circuits favored by May, including the Treble Booster Deluxe and Treble Booster Touring models, alongside the Mayday overdrive/distortion designed to approximate a cranked AC30 at lower volumes. The workshop also produces the Astronaut, a Red Special–inspired design built on a Stratocaster-style scale length.
Greg Fryer has 8 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Boost Effects Pedals and Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 2 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock and Metal. Notable users include Brian May and Phil Shouse.
