Founded in 1932 by master luthier John D'Angelico at 40 Kenmare Street in New York City's Little Italy, D'Angelico is one of the most storied names in American guitar building. John D'Angelico apprenticed under his grand uncle Raphael Ciani, a violin and mandolin maker, and applied those construction principles to archtop guitars. Over his 32-year career, he built only 1,164 instruments — each essentially handmade with minimal staff — that became the gold standard for jazz guitar. Players like Johnny Smith, Kenny Burrell, and Bucky Pizzarelli helped define the archtop sound on D'Angelico instruments. After John D'Angelico's death in 1964, his apprentice James D'Aquisto carried the craft forward under his own name.
The brand was revived under new ownership and is now headquartered in midtown Manhattan. The modern D'Angelico lineup spans three series — Deluxe, Excel, and Premier — across hollow body, semi-hollow, solid body, and acoustic guitars, as well as ukuleles. Signature models include the Deluxe Bob Weir Bedford, the Deluxe Eric Krasno Brighton, the Excel Josh Turner Tammany, the Deluxe Brandon Niederauer Atlantic, and the Deluxe Melanie Faye DC LE. The roster of artists playing D'Angelico guitars is wide-ranging, including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Kurt Rosenwinkel, H.E.R., Nels Cline of Wilco, Isaiah Sharkey, Marcus King, Jack Johnson, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Melissa Etheridge, and Daniel Donato, among many others.
