Cimar was a guitar brand founded in 1973 by Hoshino Gakki, the Nagoya, Japan-based parent company of Ibanez. It was created as a separate entry-level line so that retailers could stock Hoshino-made instruments through wholesalers without taking on full Ibanez dealer franchise agreements. Many Cimar models were built in the same Japanese factories as Ibanez guitars — most notably FujiGen — and shared hardware, construction, and even body shapes with their Ibanez counterparts.
Through the mid-to-late 1970s the catalog leaned heavily on the Japanese "lawsuit era" template, offering copies of Fender, Gibson, Martin, and Rickenbacker designs alongside classical and steel-string acoustics. Entering the 1980s the line shifted toward original shapes that closely echoed Ibanez's own electrics, and instruments from this period were branded "Cimar by Ibanez." Common models included the D-320 dreadnought acoustic and a range of double-cutaway solidbody electrics and basses.
The brand was discontinued in 1984. Cimar instruments are now collected primarily on the vintage market, where they are valued for their Japanese build quality and their close relationship to period Ibanez production.
