ProMark is an American drumstick brand founded in 1957 by Herb Brochstein in Houston, Texas. Brochstein, who was both a professional drummer and drum shop owner, partnered with craftsmen in Japan to source manufacturing and pioneered the introduction of Japanese Shira-Kashi white oak drumsticks to the American market — a first for the industry. Early production relied on hand-shaped sticks whose consistency surpassed what factory machinery of the era could deliver, and that reputation for quality became central to the brand's identity. In 2011, ProMark was acquired by D'Addario & Company, placing it alongside Evans drumheads and other percussion accessories under one of the music industry's largest accessories groups.
Over the decades, ProMark built an extensive artist roster spanning rock, jazz, country, and metal. The brand has produced signature sticks for drummers including Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Ringo Starr, Todd Sucherman, Simon Phillips, Glenn Kotche, Larnell Lewis, and Anika Nilles, among many others. Signature models typically reflect an artist's preferences in weight, taper, tip shape, and grip, and are available alongside ProMark's standard size range covering 5A, 5B, 7A, and other common formats in hickory, maple, and oak.
Under D'Addario ownership, ProMark introduced two proprietary technologies that became signature offerings: FireGrain, a heat-tempering process applied to hickory that increases durability without adding weight, and ActiveGrip, a heat-activated coating that becomes tackier as the player's hands sweat and body temperature rises. The brand's catalog extends beyond drumsticks to include mallets, brushes, and marching percussion products.
ProMark has 158 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Drumsticks, Mallets & Brushes, Drum Set Accessories, and Other Hand Drums. Their gear is featured by 173 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include The Rev, Dominic Howard, and Joey Jordison.
