Founded in 1963 by Everett Joseph "Vic" Firth — who served as Principal Timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1956 to 2002 — Vic Firth is the world's largest manufacturer of drumsticks and mallets. The company grew out of Firth's frustration with the quality of sticks available to him as a professional orchestral percussionist; he began hand-whittling prototypes and sending them to a wood turner in Montreal, eventually producing the SD1 and SD2 models that launched the business. What started in a garage in Massachusetts evolved into a company producing millions of sticks annually across a catalog of hundreds of varieties.
Vic Firth's product lines span drum set, marching, and orchestral percussion. The drumstick range includes the American Classic, American Custom, American Heritage, American Jazz, American Sound, and Signature Series lines, along with the Terra Series. Beyond sticks, the company manufactures keyboard mallets (under both the Vic Firth and Balter names), timpani mallets, brushes, VicKick bass drum beaters, RUTE multi-rod implements, and accessories such as practice pads, hearing protection, and stick bags. All products are manufactured in the USA at facilities in Newport, Maine and Norwell, Massachusetts.
The company's artist roster has included drummers across genres, from Buddy Rich and Charlie Watts to Questlove and Omar Hakim. Vic Firth merged with Avedis Zildjian Company in 2010, and operates as part of the Zildjian family of brands while maintaining its own identity and product development.
Vic Firth has 194 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Drumsticks, Mallets & Brushes, Headphones & In-Ear Monitors, and Drum Hardware Bags and Cases. Their gear is featured by 263 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include John Mahon, Matt Garstka, and Carter Beauford.
