Publison was a French audio equipment manufacturer founded in 1978 in Paris by Bruno Dauchez and Jean-Pierre Lafont. The company specialized in early digital signal processing hardware aimed at professional recording studios, and is best known for the DHM 89 — a pioneering digital stereo pitch-shifting delay introduced in 1979 — and the Infernal Machine 90, a sophisticated digital processor released in 1984 that combined pitch-shifting, time-stretching, sampling, and digital filtering in a single unit.
Other products in the catalog included the Full-Most and the Vocoder 32. Publison units became sought-after fixtures in high-end studios for their distinctive sound and capabilities that were unusual for the era, and engineer William Wittman famously used a DHM 89 to create all of the delay effects on Cyndi Lauper's 1983 album She's So Unusual. The DHM 89's legacy was acknowledged decades later when Ableton released the PitchLoop89 plugin, a Max for Live device inspired by and paying tribute to the original hardware.
Though the company ceased operations in the late 1990s, original Publison units remain prized on the vintage market for their unique character, and surviving examples are still maintained and used in professional studios. The brand is regarded as an important early innovator in digital audio effects processing.
