Shubb is a capo manufacturer founded in 1974 in Northern California by banjoist Rick Shubb and his student Dave Coontz. The company's origins trace to a fifth-string banjo capo the two collaborated on, with Coontz handling the early manufacturing out of Iowa and later Missouri. Shubb released its first production guitar capo in 1979, and the over-center locking lever design with a resilient rubber sleeve became the template for nearly all subsequent models.
The catalog centers on capos for steel-string guitar, nylon-string (classical) guitar, banjo, and ukulele, alongside partial capos, steels and slides for lap and pedal steel players, and replacement parts. Model lines include the Standard Series (the C1 and its siblings), the Royale Series with polished stainless and brass finishes, the Anniversary Series, the Paua Pearl editions, and the Pathfinders line. In 2014 the company established Shubb International to handle global distribution and shifted the bulk of manufacturing overseas.
Shubb capos are a fixture on acoustic and electric stages across folk, bluegrass, country, and rock, and the brand is frequently cited alongside Kyser and G7th as one of the dominant names in the capo market.
Shubb has 18 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Capos, Slides, and Banjo Accessories. Their gear is featured by 40 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Pop. Notable users include Chris Martin, José González, and Mary Spender.
