Founded in 1853 by German immigrant Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (later Henry E. Steinway) in a Manhattan loft, Steinway & Sons is one of the most storied piano manufacturers in the world. The company operates factories in Astoria, Queens, New York and Hamburg, Germany, each producing instruments with subtle regional differences in voicing and action. Steinway holds 139 patents in piano construction and commands over 80 percent of the high-end grand piano market. Approximately 97 percent of concertizing pianists choose Steinway, and no artist is paid to endorse the brand.
The Steinway grand piano lineup ranges from the 5'1" Model S to the 8'11¾" Model D concert grand, the standard of concert halls worldwide. The company also produces the Model K upright. The Spirio line adds high-resolution player piano technology to select grand models, capable of recording and reproducing a pianist's performance with remarkable fidelity. Beyond the flagship Steinway brand, the company markets Boston pianos for the mid-range market and Essex pianos as an entry-level option, both designed by Steinway engineers but manufactured in Asia.
Steinway Artists span classical and popular music, including Lang Lang, Daniel Barenboim, Evgeny Kissin, Billy Joel, Diana Krall, and Harry Connick Jr. Historical Steinway Artists include Sergei Rachmaninoff and Vladimir Horowitz.
