ZETA Violins (originally ZETA Music Systems) was founded in the late 1970s in California by Keith McMillen and Richard McClish, and became one of the defining names in electric violin design through the 1980s. The brand's reputation was built on its proprietary bridge system, which used two piezo pickups per string to cancel unwanted overtones and bow noise — a design that helped make solid-body and synth-driven electric violins viable for amplified stage use. Jean-Luc Ponty's adoption of the company's instruments helped popularize the Jazz Fusion model and established ZETA as a fixture in jazz fusion and amplified string playing.

In 2012, after a period of dormancy, the assets of ZETA Music Systems were acquired by Steve Carlson and Dennis Balian, and operations were relocated to Montana. Carlson, known previously for his Flatiron Mandolins and his work resurrecting Gibson's mandolin line, took over as lead luthier.
