Hey Cary. The only tip I have at the moment is to move to an area with cleaner resources :p

Fill out your board as best you can, get involved with the forum, and look at the artists you know a lot about and see if their gear is correct.

There is an Aria II bass for sale on Austin's craigslist right now that I'm so angry over not being able to get right now. Cool basses.

Shaneless advertising of... Wait, isn't this the company that senda random people texts asvertisig their stuff? Why would you link that here?

yes, but he DID bother to introduce himself and he DOES play the bass, so.... how's the vox working out?

You know what? At first, I thought "lacking a bit of mids", but spent last night and this morning studying and at some point I plugged in the Swede and wow... A lot better than pluging a Roland in. I'll play more later if I get the chance, but school's suckig out every minute of free time. Just a bit stressed is all, I'll make time... Hopefully

also, the tone controls don't work the way you think, the top boost circuit is really unique even though it is similar to tweed fender and marshall in basic layout the way the bass control is wired makes the 2 controls more interactive than any other similar design. For a powerfully midrangey sound turn both controls all the way down and then make minor adjustmments to one or the other if the sound is too dark or too bright

some of it is also that you aren't used to tube amps, most of them have a mid scoop built into the tone controls, its just centered differently on different brands or even different eras from different brands like 50s versus 60s fender, but its there... vox has a very unique tone control voicing that can be offputting at first, but once yous tart playing her louder and/or in a band setting you will appreciate how she cuts through without getting abrasive. Tube amps also change response pretty substantially the more you turn them up. She's not going to do the Fender sound, but a fender can't do vox either.

Hey guys and girls I want to introduce myself as the latest newbie to just a badass website. So my name is Matthew and I am a guitar player. And I'm really tired and that's all I have to say for right now, nice meeting all of you all and I'm going to bed.

Are you a veteran Matthew?

Hello, my name is Bill. I have been playing (Self Taught) guitar and harmonica for years.

Educated in the University of Hard Knocks.

Started playing blues and classic rock; then moved to punk and rockabilly. The past ten years I have been focusing on Shoegaze, Ambient, and Avant guard Jazz.

My approach/ goal is to write, sound and play like no one else. To sculpt air; making big sound with minimal gear and technique a life long pursuit. in short make more with less or in line with the Bauhaus "fine art meets, applied art" "form meets function". Though I love all types of music, I have no interest in performing covers. . I see myself as a borderline hack can play about any style or like about any artist but never any of their songs as I feel it is a form of disrespect to the original art. Haven't done that in 20 yrs and feel no need to. Though Standards are excluded

My main interest is music with the principle in mind "if it was written for the sole purpose of making money it is not that good" So I look to musicians that are write and perform for the love of music. It is a fine line but follow artist that push boundaries or express themselves in a unique way. As a street musician in San Francisco c. 1968 told me "The best music will not be heard on the radio, rarely on a record. but live." This has carry with me though out my life and started a fire/quest to seek out new/unknown musicians and music.

I am influenced by Santana, Robin Guthrie, Vini Reilly, and Neil Young mostly.

Inspired by: Alex Macheck, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, John Coltrane, Errol Garner, Thelonious Monk,Johnny Marr, Harold Budd, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno.

Artist and bands I like are: Joy Division, Pat Metheny, Derek Trucks, Dickey Betts, Harold Budd, Kraftwerk, Al DiMeola, Wes Montgomery, Yes, Rush, Paco De Lucia, and Dick Dale.

Lesser known Artist: Cocteau Twins, Durutti Column, Dead Can Dance, Dif Juz, The Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Airiel, Manual, Ulrich Schnauss, Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, Bill Kirchen, The Pallidins/Dave Gonzalez. DeadBolt, just to name a few but not limited to this list. I don't have the time or space to list them all.

In line with my philosophy my main setup up is Blackstar ID 30 amp, Brian Moore i9, or Acoustic Manuel Rodriguez Classical. For Travel Traveler Speedster, Blackstar Fly 3, Korg Pandora PX3 or iRig UA. and a Minidisc recorder. I have other gear but trying to narrow it all down to bare minimum.

Other interest are History, Philosophy, Theology, Comedy, Soccer (Queens Park Rangers/Liverpool FC/MK Dons), Nebraska Cornhusker Football, Cycling, Craft Beer, Modern Art, Food, Travel, and the Bauhaus School of thought and design and POLKA!!!

I look forward to sharing and learning from all here on the Board and forgive my foolishness in advance.

those artists in 'lesser known' aren't well-known? okay, maybe not durutti column, but they got at least a passing mention in 24 hour party people and I saw that in a mainstream USA cinema when it was released, so...............

anyway, welcome

Welcome pony. I am nothing like you, at all, which will make for good discussions later.

Hello everyone,

My name is Jim, I am from Phoenix, AZ, USA, 45 years old. I have been a musician since I was 14. I am a guitarist first, but also love synths of all kinds - analog, digital, workstations, whatever appeals to me. I grew up in the '80s, and was heavily influenced by alternative music from that era - Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Ministry, and any kind of post-punk, goth, industrial, new wave, and synthpop.

I was in a few bands over the years, but didn't release my first album until 2012. I am now working on album #2, and hoping to assemble a live band for some fun gigs. I love gear, and am still in the market for a new bass guitar and guitar FX unit.

If you want to hear the music I make, I have my full length album, singles, and a couple of live/cover comps on Bandcamp. Everything is free, if you wish to download any of the songs. 'Between Hope and Fear' is the full-length album. I wrote and performed all music and lyrics, and a friend helped record and mix the album:

I will try to be a regular on the forums..the discussions look very interesting and appealing. Pleased to meet you all!

Howdy Jim

aww man, I see we're DX7-II brothers... I wish I had your D50 though, guess its your equivalent to my ESQ1

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard

Look forward to hearing more from you. I like your direction and music. Thanks for sharing.

I would love to have an ESQ1! I used to have an EPS 16+ Turbo for about 15 years. It served me well, but I sorta regret passing on an M1 and a JD-800 to buy it (I was young and not very knowledgeable of synths at the time). My DX-7 II is in great physical shape, but needs some internal TLC. The headphone output is bad, so I have bought a new jack assembly (have yet to install it). The pitch wheel only pitches down (the output, not the wheel), so I am on the lookout for a wheel assembly (could just be a bad pot, but probably easiest to replace that whole part).

Also, a lot of my factory sounds suddenly have modulation on them. After some online research, it seems I may have to reload my sysex files via MIDI from my pc? I think I'd rather put the work into it myself, than sell it, I'm just having a hard time finding a replacement pitch wheel assembly.

The D-50 was a gift from a friend, believe it or not. The synth was just sitting in a case under his bed for years, and he was not interested in selling it to me, so he just handed it over! It came with two sound cards, and works great, though I get some static with the volume slider. Not sure how to fix that (I usually just leave it in one position anyway).

Sorry, didn't mean to get all Chatty Cathy on you! :)

Jim
