Who can help me read the markings on a vintage Fender neck?
that sticker is a bad thing.... I hate to have you peel it away, but its not good for the guitar having it in there as it acts like a tiny shim, but since its not centered in any way its probably thowing off the neck joint....even a tiny piece of paper can help or hurt a bolt on... microns worth of paper make a difference
the code is a late period date code for the neck, but I have no idea how to read it.... earlier in the CBS era they literally stamped the date on like this: 12DEC68, but sometime around the change back to 4 bolts yous tart seeing these other codes instead in this xxxx#xxxx format among other variations that make no more sense to me... the stamp is usually the name of the QC checker, but yours is odd in that it has "r friend" as well as a sticker that appears to list people who worked on or checked this neck.... the name stamp also looks wrong size and fontwise compared to other fender neck stamps of the era....
I wouldn't really stress if the headstock serial jives and youa re sure its an original neck to the guitar

take a picture of YOUR neck stamps, not someone else's.... I have some ideas here but I want to see the font of the 'serial' number before I speculate
I would also love to see detailed pics of the whole guitar so I can see all the distinguishing features

you listen to any music that's outside your normal repertoire lately?

Dallas is pretty far away from all of us though.
people who have not been to Texas don't get that its larger than most Europen countried and that the communities are pretty spread out compared to the urban areas on the east and west coast

interestinly, I experienced a less publicized random shooting like this when I lived outside DC. I was in Laurel and the local mall was the next township over in Columbia MD. The day of this mall shooting I was actually pulling into the parking lot with my then-wife who was pregnant with my son (a pregnant woman's need for gourmet cupcakes is insatiable) when we were turned away by the police and FBI who ahd cordoned off the area to track down the shooter. So I have had a very close brush with this sort of thing and while I was very shaken by it (especially given the proximity of my unborn child to the danger), the insanity in my community that followed only served to entrench my opinions.
even more interestingly, that particular incident was not publicized to the extent that most are these days.... some suggested it was not a major national news item because the casualties were relatively low and most of the victims survived, but I suspect that Columbia's proximity to the Capitol was the real reason ;-)

these are issues people have been struggling with since the birth of non-autocratic forms of government in ancient Greece...
basically in America the debate is always reframed as 2 compass points regarding government control and personal freedoms: partially or entirely disarming the populace VS constant surveillance of the same with increasing infringement on the privacy of individuals who act suspiciously or merely do not conform
neither option fits my definition of a free society... I don't want to own a fire arm and feel uncomfortable with them in the hands of my fellow citizens (even though most own them with the best of intentions, shit happens and a mistake with a bullet generally has permanent consequences), but I don't want the government preventing those same people from owning them just because I feel uneasy... I am even more uncomfortable with government watchlists, particularly ones comprised of people who have never committed a crime, no matter how nutty they sound on the internet! There are lots of people that may scare me with their words but few who turn their words toa ction and knowing the difference is usually a product of hindsight. Disarming everyone and/or spying on people at the fringes of society is just not something I want to cosign in order to feel a little safer when I leave my house. How much safer will it really make me? How much will I notice the erosion of my privacy and personal libierties? Tough to say, lets not find out....
living is dangerous, I accept it and if freedom comes with 'grave responsibility' then a coralary is that with freedom comes an unpredictable element of daily, personal risk
there's so much fingerpointing, if as Americans we must constantly assign blame, why not blame the perpetrator and leave it be? These are allt erribly incidents that should not have happened, but I feel that creating a more open and cring society in which mental illness is better treated and less stigmatized will go further in preventing marginalized people from perpetrating acts of senseless violence than taking yet another step towards a police state.
Education, guys.... and not just the 3 Rs. Although I can suggest a 4th R that would help; redistribution of wealth. But that's beyond the scope of this reponse.
Sorry if I've offended anyone who disagrees with me. Its a free country (mostly, for now) and we are all entitled to our opinions and yours are no less valid than my own (heck, even if your opinion is moronic you are entitled to it).... just please don't try to convert me with your reply. I am not trying to debat anyone, just lay out my own anachronistic platform for consideration.

an original jazzmaster has a pickguard mounted jack.... go to www.warmoth.com to see what they can drill for on the jazzcaster and no-pickguard jazzie bodies they make.... I am sure they will let you know precisely what can and can't fit on a properly contoured offset body right on their site, it is very informative
EDIT:
if you can fit a standard size tele jack cup and don't use L-ends I recommend the electrosocket, its a great product....
personally I would do a top mounting jack because on stage nothing is more secure and trouble-free than an L jack plugged into the wood munted jacks on Gibson SGs and 335s with the cable then looped around the strap to allow a little slack inc ase you step on the cable and yank it... also, I have never once tightened the nuts on the jacks on my SG or 335 and my 335 is older than I am, the wood mounted jack is just very secure... the modern-neck-joint SG and 335 are just 2 really well thought out guitar designs from nut to bridge... they only suffer from gibson's weak headstock and crappy outward string pull that causes the strings to bend at the nut when you bend and even when you are tuning, but otherwise the control layout, knob and jack placement, fret access, all near perfect (Imean, one of the pickup volumes being where the selector is might be good, but then the selector would be a reach while I am playing so its a tough call)... so yeah, I would top-mount the jack right into the wood SG style, its the best arrangements though not the prettiest.
but I digress
the electrosocket and the metal football shaped plates are pretty darn sturdy and nice too

that appears to be a radial dragster (great device by the way, Is wear by the one built into my Switchbone), most guys who use the stand alone dragster clip it to their guitar strap along with a wireless

the blues is a small pool of harmonic, metric and rhythmic musical forms, the 12 bar blues (major or minor) being the most famous and popular example.... blues has ceased to be a such a strict term except for in purist circles, but at the time it was a well established group of African American musical forms used in jazz, ragtime, gospel, country, some forms of folk and.... you guessed it, delta blues. Entitling your song 'insert adjective blues' was letting the listener (and, more importantly if you didn't bring a bunch of charts on the road, a pick up band in whatever town you were playing) know basically what form the structure would take... "This one's called the exploited strummer blues,' y'all.... key of Bb boys, take it away, 2 anda 3 anda 4!"
Ragtime music had a similar phenomenon.... hile ltos of forms could be turned into ragtime, there is a specific musical form know as a rag and most songs in this format have to titles like "blah blah blah RAG"....

I'll try to live with that. But no response is really needed.

I agree on both counts, but I don't think his goal is good tone, just adequate sound with feedback-free projection in the open air so he can sit on the corner and beg for change.
Something I really want to try next time I need acoustic guitar in a stage environment that is not microphone friendly is using a cheap pickup system through an impulse response of a nice old Martin or Gibson right into the PA..... but this guy just wants to be heard across the street!

hahaha, Angus and Malcolm are more proficient than one would guess just listening to all the stock rock harmonic clichés they use in their tunes... but they are straight up rockers and don't try to reinvent the wheel, just spin it with aplomb. AC/DC is easy to understand but difficult to execute with their level of precision individually and as a band.
thanks for backing me up, I was not trying to bash the young man or Ms King (Lilith fair noodler sounded harsh, but you are what you are.... I'm a washed up, phrase-stealing, hack songwriter), just encourage him to tone down the rhetoric, listen critically and develop a 'can do' attitude to music. If you say 'that's genius, I could never pull that off' then you never will. And if that's your attitude you are putting yourself down and I don't need to bother!
10yalmost 10 years ago
I'm sure you could use a pocket amp, but they are voiced for electric guitar so it may not be flattering.

I am putting everyone, myself included, down.... guitar is not terribly difficult and just about any genre of pop/rock music is very easy to compose and arrange competently if you diligently build the skill set required to do so. I am telling you that everyone will seem less brilliant once you hone your chops and learn more about what makes their compositions and performances tick. Kill your heroes and woodshed until you're a guitar hero yourself. And do it because you love MUSIC
Also, listen to some music, even guitar centric music, that is outside your comfort zone. Maybe some music that predates rock 'n roll. The great American Song Book is loaded with... you guessed it, great American songs and I really don't think anyone but the Beatles and maybe Burt Bacharach managed to keep up with the likes of Cole Porter and the Gershwins. Familiarize yourself with the pioneers of your instrument like Charlie Christian, Merl Travis, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Bert Jansch, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Bird and even the ubiquitous early blues guys like Robert Johnson. You don't have to like it or choose to listen to it again, but it will broaden your guitar horizons considerably just to hear and analyze some of this music. Give your playing and writing some scope, and even sharpen your critical listening through historical context.
Now back to Khaki King, do you think she's single and liked toddlers? My therapist is on me to date again and I really think I am going to enforce a 'serious musicians only' policy... there's just no talking to non-musicians sometimes and that's no basis for a relationship as it turns out.

EVERYONE used ovations live when they came out in the 70s, they were still pretty ubiquitous when I was a kid.... used to see them all over empty-vee in its early days, especially the ovation 12 string models
personally I can't stand them, but they serve a very real purpose and were literally th only game in town for feedback free electro-acoustic guitar on large arena stages for a VERY long time
you called some Lilith Fair noodler a musical genius, you just toss this shit out left and right, dn't you? always makin' with the hyperbole... when you learn more about music and the guitar its all going to seem a lot less impressive
to the OP:
I think everything mentioned so far is a pretty good option.... used low-end taylors, takamines (older is better with taks) seagulls, yamahas (I prefer the old yamis too, they are still quite affordable and are universally great instruments in the 70s and 80s)...
there's lots of decent and affordable acoustics, just go play some... check out the bargain wall of used cheapies at your local big box store just to get a feel for what the sub-$200 used guitars are like from each rband
10yabout 10 years ago
seagull guitars are the best deal going for price/quality... cheap as sin and great

scotty moore had to die in order for you to learn the lick from 'mystery train,' so what.... do you want to be good at guitar or cool? because its actually hard to be both
10yabout 10 years ago
it can only make you a better musician to listen to music outside of your recreational listening comfort zone

Hollow body bass that could play unplugged
maybe it was covered by someone else... my answer is always a flea market, fixer-upper stand up bass.... the best acoustic bass tone is from a double bass, the bass guitar was invented to be an electric solid body. Its a bass GUITAR. Leo meant for it to do the job of a classical bass in the new-fangled, all amplified groups playing country and western at the time because the uprights just couldn't bring the lows to the back of the ho-down, but tis really just a giant, bass voiced tele and that's how it works best. Trying to retro-engineer it into an acoustic guitar with bass strings is kinda silly and defeatist.
10yabout 10 years ago
the one in the video is tough, its blurry and he's playing it T-Bone Walker style so I can't see it well, headstock does NOT look Gibson to me and it looks like the pickup may not be original, like it may be a modified acoustic archtop
bottom one is an es-295 like Scotty Moore played (I am still crushed that no one replied to the thread about Scotty's passing earlier this week, like you young bucks have never heard of the man who did more -pun intended- to create rock n roll guitar playing than any player but Chuck Berry)... the 295 is a gaudy and altogether bad-assed Gibson mid-sized archtop. Even new ones cost an arm and a leg or I would own one!

Lets hope he got at least two Jeff picks or there will be an auction
I'm sure I have 2 yellow ones unless someone stole them from my apartment in DC before I moved back to Philly. If I can't find more than 1 to sell its going to be 1st come 1st served though, which means Hickiracki-dude-guy who started the thread gets it
He will, man. The guy claimed to have a few picks. And we will get them, for certain.

Or, if they're British, 75 cents.
I have a sneaking suspicion these are going to be shipping international, so its going to be riot if the postage is more than the value of the picks, even at memorabilia pricing
10yabout 10 years ago
I am happy SOMEONE understood the reference.
we all got it... not everyone is a fan of Cornell's other band, it was tough to take it seriously after growing up with THIS
10yabout 10 years ago
I'll throw in more derogatory comments!
no really, I was just joking.... they can have 'em for whatever the lowest auction price is on ebay or whatever plus actual shipping. I am so sorry I metnioned I had them now, Narcy. I was just trying to point out that its not a big deal to have seen Jeff or Kurt or any of these guys and it went off to the fucking races.
10yabout 10 years ago
except I 'got it'.... they will merely have purchased them from me. Hence why I called them fanboys. Well, one of them objected and is a 'fangirl' apparently...
all I keep thinking is: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6f/TenaciousDInThePickOfDestinySoundtrack.jpg
