the Turks arguably have the most secular government in the Islamic world, but they have had problems balancing parliamentary democracy and a strong military ever since establishing their republic following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in World War I (they can thank Lawrence of Arabia). The trouble is that their revolution was driven by a segment of the Ottoman officer class.... I could go on. I am not surprised by this coup d'état one bit. I just don't know what the military's goals are yet. Nor am I sure if tis the entire military or just hardline segments of the military. The next week should explain everything as the violence plays out. Hopefully its nothing to do with religious issues. We just don't need more of that over in the middle east, especially with Turkey having a foothold ine astern Europe.... and more importantly I hope the violence dies down so our Turkish friends aren't being gunned down en-mass.

Rules:

1: Must use a kazoo

2: Must use video to show you are really hitting the notes yourself

3: Must not use a kazoo

so can I use my kazoo or not, man?

but seriously, how can one compare riffs? especially out of the context of a song? in context sometimes the most juvenile, rudimentary licks will be the best, whereas massively impressive and original modality can fall flat depending on the context.... and then there's the question of stylistic taste! I will automatically be less into metal stuff or effects driven parts, whereas narcist would probably be down on any country playing I submit because that's our taste.... How do you judge this contest?

if you're going to do it, it needs some guidelines.... like maybe a set of pre-recorded chord changes everyone needs to work within? I would say to create a repetitive chord change with and then record it in a number of different styles so people could pick a version and add a lead I guess... thogh I am more of a large ensemble or power trio guy.

And what is it with people and competitions? Its very helenistic to try to have a music contest.

I am suspicious you cooked up a riff you want to show off and that's what prompted this.

very attractive.... is that guy using BOTH those orange heads? If so, cool points to him. Stereo is really fun.

also, bolt-on is NOT A BAD THING, its just different... its cheaper because its less labor intensive than setting a neck or carving a neck thru, but inferior? no, not inferior in any way despite Gibson's 80s and 90s marketing hyperbole. If you want a Gibson, by all means get a Gibson. They are great. If you want a bolt-on get a decent Fender or maybe this Farida. THey will be great at doing the bolt-on sound.

PS:

tweedprotweedpro, narrowpaneltweedpro, poking at my friend to drop by with that Pro today! So many amps to own, so little time (and space)

see, if you want a vox, get an AC30..... if you want a 30 watt fender, get a tweed Pro.... one is not better than the other, they are just different (even though the vox is so much prettier), SAME THING as the set-neck versus bolt-on question.... pick your preference but admit that both can be great and that its nice to have both

I am going to rant here because I get sick of all the Gibson bashing and don't think they are as greedy as you amature economists make out:

everybody bitches about the cost of Gibsons, but apart from a slight upcharge for name recognition you need to consider that they are an American made set-neck that only come in finicky-to-shoot lacquer finishes. Its Fender USA that is really ripping you off. There is hardly any hand labor involved in a standard USA Fender. They use the same self-levelling modern finshes as import guitars and are entirely CNCed getting just a little hand sanding. Bolt necks require no extra time or hand-work to assemble and if the neck angle comes out wrong for some reason (unlikely with modern CNC routers and rough sanders) its no issue to pop the neck off and shim it. Takes literally 2 minutes of labor assuming you keep shims around and Fender does. Most Fenders have no binding, and on the off chance you get a bound neck its not fret-edge binding so it requires very little handwork apart from some sanding and then scraping during finishing. On the other hand every Gibson is comparatively boutique. They are only roughed in with machines and everything else is hand shaped. Body binding is still hand glued (I think they use CNC routers to cut the channels in the Nashville plant) and the rubber-band the stuff BY HAND to clamp it and cure the glue. Fret nibs are still hand shaped. Neck pockets are rouched in by machine, but the tennons and mortises are hand-refined during the neck setting process. And that gluing process is done by, you guessed it, a skilled American worker who carefully gets it right, applies the correct amount of titebond and then cleans up the extra glue and properly hand clamps it to dry. Lacquer is still applied the old fashioned way by a guy with a spray gun, not an auto-industry machine that's only good for UV reactive, quick drying and self-levelling polies.... you are talking about tons more American labor and American labor is not cheap. And while not everyone doing the labor may be a luthier or even a craftsman even in an old-school guitar factory I will point out these guys are extremely skilled at their one task, are unionized, and make more than you do to set that neck or shape that binding.

Given the weakness of the dollar and that salaries for skilled union labor in the USA are the only non-executive salaries that seem to consistently chase the rate of inflation, Gibson is actually keeping prices relatively low considering what goes into a lot of these models. Now, if you hate Gibsons they will always be overpriced to you because you are too busy looking for different neck profiles and shapes like Boom. But you need to recognize the obvious expense of creating an LP standard. Back before the price hike a few years ago you could grab standard for under $2k new at guitar center. There was a point where the dollar was in the toilet and Gibson was probably not making a lot of money on standard with their labor costs being so high and the average Gibson fan's buying power having plummeted so low so suddenly. With the sheer number they weren't selling coupled with the ever-increasing cost of keeping their staff on I am not surprised they had to hike prices 20-25%.

on your fender scale LP, hardly any Gibsons use 25.5" scale.... a few jazz boxes made in Memphis or at the custom shop and some flat-top acoustics from Montana, that's it.... they are reprogramming and retooling all the automated stuff to produce that guitar or they are doing it all the old-fashioned way.... either way its going to cost them more even if all the materials are the same. Time is money.

Now 70s Norlin-era Gibson is another matter, but modern Gibsons are really pretty decent across the board and they have been since the 90s. They got rid of Norlin in the 80s and started putting their hosue in order. Sure they charge you for all the work put into making a quality product again between '88 and '92, but its a business and this is a capitalist country. They may still be paying off the loan on those PLEK machines for all we know! Guitar manufacturing is not a cash cow, even for the big 2. Go look up the yearly profit margins on Gibson and Fender and prepare to be amazed.

I have read similar statements and his guitar tech mentioned his guitar had furniture varnish to me at a show, but we mostly talked about the twid champ and blackface deluxe elvis was using because that's what really interested me at the time as his tone was quit poor that night despite using 2 iconic vintage fenders.... he was using some boss pedals though and I don't think the champ handled them well, though his tech assured me that's the sound elvis likes these days... to be fair with everything disengaged it sounded pretty darn nice as long as he was using his tele-style guitar, as did his gretsch tenor electric, but he kept kicking stuff on and he would pop out of the mix too loud and just sound generally muddy... and the jzzmaster sounded awful regardless, surprisingly so

Actually, I don't know if the Pro is coming tomorrow. I thought my friend said he was free this weekend, but now it is looking like not.... so definitely no pressure on the ac4, I won't even box her up until you tell me you figured out the finances.

She has the original Vox cover and footswitch for hot mode too... I am including a vintage Mullard 12AT7 preamp tube for V1 that really does the amp some justice, great tone and a smidge more headroom... other tubes are JJ I think Is your birthday coming up or anything? Maybe your dad will buy it for you? Its kind've a pricey gift for a young adult, but.... it never hurts to ask. Unless you get sick of rejection.

so Costello's is stained and then furniture varnished? I just remember him saying someone had hit it with furniture finish but couldn't recall the details.... I am a huge fan of his singing and songwriting (I have seen him with and without the Imposters several time, never disappoints), but when I think guitar playing hes not the 1st guy who comes to mind, even in that idiom.

You definitely want that Tweed Pro more, and it will be well worth the cost of the Vox. I guarentee it But seriously, it's yours. If you want to sell it, I'll buy it.

money hasn't changed hands but the pros is on its way this weekend, I can rudely back out but I was planning to try it and buy it unless its utter dog's hiney, which it won't be. I already know I am a fan of the pro/super/bandmaster range of tweeds

pachabel's cannon, or 4 bars of it

I can live, with or without it .. even when I play under the bridge downtown, when I come around... I just wanna hear the other 4 bars, it makes me a BASKETCASE!

bwahahaha

to be fair, when I was 13, while I knew a lot about MUSIC I was pretty naïve to electronics.... I mighta needed the dude to identify each pedal's use.... we oldsters only remember the completely LACK of info when we were kids! I ahd to disassemble a lot of stuff to find out what made it tick, but you folks are lucky and can just google search a schematics.... when I started there was barely an internet let a lone a google

you could have politely told him that thanks to the internet you are more knowledgeable than a lot of adults, just less experienced and that you could talk at his level, but instead you pussied out and took offense... don't be a teenager!

or maybe he woulda continued to condescend you anyway and the problem is that you're going to church.... I am not going to say it outright, but lets face it, certain communities of people have a high dickhead ratio and they congregate weekly

the standard of musicianship required to call yourself a musician is so low now it beggars description.... trying to play decent music (or event talk about it) with people who know only the pentatonics and the absolute rudiments of harmonic theory is almost as frustrating as dealing with so-called 'producers'

here's another of my peeves, musicians who say 'jazz chords' to describe any harmonic relationship that is more complicated than a dominant 7th

and if one more tool bag looks at me blankly when I refer to a repetitive metric concept in their music as a cadence I will scream

For the record, there are close to zero situations in which a beginner guitarist with a good entry-level guitarist and a pack of fresh strings and plenty of colleagues who are experienced in the skill

no one taught me to change electric strings, I got it down thru trial and error... the strtching and wrapping process took me a long time to work out well, but by the time anyone told me the right way I had already arrived at it myself just by wanting my guitars to stay the fuck in tune when I played blues licks.
