Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

if we're allowing yahoos with a youtube presence and a bar band band to post as pros then I am getting a pro page for me and my former bandmates. In our day we were bigger than a lot of these people garnering frequent spins on regional FM rock stations and college radio. Our website had insane traffic when it existed. In my opinion we were a middling act that was only quasi-pro (we periodically had day jobs, not PRO), but if the bar is being lowered I want a pro page to document my touring days and gear

top is most certainly alder with an unusually pronounced grain

bottom looks like some type of ash even though I have never heard of a stock jazzmaster with anything but alder

CBS finishes are typically polyesther though in the early days they were still using nitro and duco over fullerplast as a sealer... the easiest furniture type finish to use is shellac

must be rough, you can't walk a meter (you guys use meters, right?) into a music shop without stumbling on a good used strat in the USA.. But we invented the electric guitar and all of the music that utilizes it, so its only fair. I have literally had that problem buying stuff on a whim where strats kept sticking to me for awhile. My good friend has that problem right now, he's always building strats but he runs into off-the-shelf fenders and he winds up with a lot of them (I think he actually has 2 SRV signatures now and plays neither of them, he just wound up with them). My JV was acquired for a song and a dance used when I wasn't even shopping. I was up in New England visiting friends and this one dude was like "wanna see our badass guitar store?" I just went to see the place and left with a strat... I think that happened with this one surf green strat too, went for strings, left with a strat...

okay, okay, that's happened to me with more than just strats. I got my esquire when Igot a deal on the gretsch I was lusting and had $300 in budget leftover so I bought a beat up fender too. Or my SG, I had stopped shopping for gibsons, but I was selling some studio gear and there it was.... broke even.

I can't imagine not being able to find guitars worth owning EVERYWHERE

its actually a bit depressing since you just can't buy them all... because I would.

no, I'm selling it to you if you want her unless I try the pro and HATE it... maybe even then, I am barely using my ac4 and its a waste of a great little amplifier

you should have it and make use of it

you know, listening back, that ac4 sounds righteous... if I didn't want the Pro so badly I would keep it.

hey, I kinda like Brad Paisley! Guilty pleasure... and what's wrong with songs about beer, cars and women? I like all 3 of those things. Alright alright, they don't make great song topics though...

but give Brad another listen, he is a great player and some of his songs are pretty catchy to boot. Also, we are ac30 brothers, both owning a '62 as our 'secret Tele weapon'

I feel like it would be sweet of you guys to treat us all as pros, but we aren't. Our income is not derived entirely from our music.... and the demand for people to know about our gigging setups is very low as a result of our lack of notoriety, therefore its really cluttering the site. There's a big gulf of professionality between me and, say, Jimmy Page. My ego would love to see my page on an equal footing with his, but its just dishonest. Pagey I am not.

I found another demo I did of the amp thru the original speaker with my tele, lots of different knob settings, I start out with voiceover describing my settings and what pickups I am using but then get too into it to keep describing things.... the end is definitely HOT MODE

I used a mix of a fender heavy and fingers throughout so you can really hear the dynamic response.

10yalmost 10 years ago

Gear Purchases

firebird pickups are their own thing, coils wrapped over bar magnets and epoxied into the cover.... notoriously bright too.... you want the tone knob

the firebird 1 is not for everyone, but I have played more than a few and I like it a lot.. I also have plenty of more fully featured axes already

a PAF style neck bucker is a really jazzbox specific style.... I had a guild like that when I was in jazzband as a kid... bridge pickup only versus enck pickup only? both are good, it just depends if you wanna be Johnny Smith or Johnny Thunders

10yalmost 10 years ago

I prefer the earlier neck-thru ones that are like upside down jazzmasters, but the non-reverses are cool too...

I have been searching for an offrdable firebird 1 which is like the LP Jr of firebiards with a single mini hum and a wraparound bridge.... its a caveman rock guitar:

cool, I just can't justify getting the Pro unless I let something go and the ac4 is not getting any use lately... its great but it treads the same ground as my other 3 voxies, just half as loud, the initial excitement of owning it wore off and I was like "how often do I plug in to practice? wait! I never even bother to practice anymore!!!!"

here's a demo of my Japanese DC plaintop I did with her last year:

https://youtu.be/Qi6UYNoCYoU

its thru an external cab and I pretty much have her setup to be stupid hot with nothing in-line but it gives the flavor of the circuit... though I don't know your guitar will have articulation under heavy distortion like the 77 does, but you can always take it out of hot mode or fiddle the gain and master to change the response... I just set her flat and HOT though because I am like that, no fussing around with knobs

it shall be mine.... oh yes, it shall be mine

why does everyone have to add themselves or their buddies on here as guitar heroes? is it ego or an attempt to improve the web presence for these local bands in the hopes of getting signed? I dunno

I just looked at the Beggs page and did a quick google of his band (just because I have never heard of them doesn't mean they aren't famous, I am old), they seem like kids in what is at best a moderately successful regional act, not international touring pros... I for one am not sure Mr Beggs needs a pro page as I doubt many people will be searching for his gear (which is not drool-worthy)

hey Michael!!! what do you think?

every time I see these regional guys creep up as pros on here I am tempted to put my old band up and create us all pages! We actually all had fairly drool-worthy stuff when we were having our run of success on the eastern seaboard of the USA...

Whoa Slayerdude, you said immediately. Sounds like an urgent gear emergency.... look, review all the incorrect submissions with "needs improvement" and state why. Some of the stuff you can edit, but you can't change an incorrect item, nor can we as mods change or delete it. One of the 2 admins will have to address some of this. If you plan to use yourself as a source because you know Rory that's cool, please also support with pictures though. I want to say that's how we've been handing it when someone's guitar o bass tech comes on and sites themselves...

the alnico 50s rola speaker was gloroious until I killed her, but that's old speakers for you! the cone was worn out and the voice ciol was not in good shape but who can tell until you slam a an old speaker? I don't know that it was everyone's tone, not modern and not pedal friendly the way you youngins use effects, but great for ME, running the amp flat out all the time

you should be able to get a good speaker for 50 to 100 bucks... I did not like the stock greenback with the ac4hw1, too much woody midrange for me, but ymmv... a used 16ohm g12m should only run you 75 bucks shipped on ebay... I recommend something less midrangey like:

https://wgs4.com/Reaper

alnicos are great but for a pedal guy I thinka (relatively) high power, large ferrite magnet celestion clone will prove more versatile and I actually like th reaper and reaper 55hz better than the celstion H magnet reissues (this is a bright amp and you could consider the 55hz bass version but it may prove too thumpy, I dunno what you like)

you can't afford an alnico anyway and the vintage H magnet celestion design has a fairly even response with a flattering but subtle mid spike compared to other ferrite (aka ceramic) celestion designs

yes, I removed/sold the stock Chinese celestion greenback and replaced it with a vintage alnico that I promptly blew out! old speakers get tired and can't handle overdrive.

maybe he realized he wantedmore, or my buddy quoted m3 $650 before and I forgot because I was drinking wine or something and had selective hearing... but I feel like he upped the price on me. Still, cheaper and cooler than the the '63 tremolux.... or is it? maybe I need both amps. anyway, the ac4hw will blow your little mind, its like 100 steps up from what you have. I wouldn't sell it but I recently bought a silver SG special, so.....

An mxr badassOD, great pedal, not using it... I also am not using the fuzzface I built a decade ago, but I like both of them. How many guitars? I think I have a dozen+, but none are for sale, they all have sentimental value. I also regularly play all of them, I already played 4 of them just since 4pm today. Sorry. I don't have an exact count today but I am going with 12 including acoustics. Okay?

But I will sell a de-speakered AC4HW1 for $500 plus actual shipping t fund the tweed Pro. My buddy Z-Money just upped his price for the pro so $500 ill just cover the bulk of it. But I will stick to $500 as my asking price for one of the finest modern production amps available under 15 watts.

whats funny about you is the first time you spoke up on here you called yourself an intermediate guitarist, but just as much as you are an electronics newb you are a novice player.... if I gave you lessons I would charge a beginner rate (lower than my advanced rate as its a pretty basic lesson plan for all beginners, thogh I no longer teach because you young knowitalls piss me off to no end and your money's not green)

Blues Cube is a bit different, but their lowest output level is 30-watts. No different from a 25-watter. BUT, like I said, I will not argue with their JC Clean tone. By far my favourite tone i've heard.

actually the blues cubes have scalable power amps (which is easy with solid state), I think the watter goes as low as 5 watts.... plus its solid state so its a more consistent quality of clean tone throughout the volume dial (although this is the rare ss amp sounds good overloaded so it might not be bad to scale her back and push the clean channel until it gets hair when you dig in... a real fender tweed she ain't, but she's not a jazz chorus either)

speaking of tweed stuff, years ago my buddy (who is the guy I turn to when I can't fix or design something without advice) built a tweed pro in the classic 1x15 but decided he doesn't like it, I am huge fan of the pro and super (basically the same amp with different speakers and output transformers)... should I pony up $500 for it? I dn't NEED it, but I don't have a fender amp right now and have never owned a big tweed, just the little Dluxe and Gibson Titan (which is not titanic, its barely enough for a bar gig at 10)

the pro/super circuit is about 35 watts so it would hang well with my ac30s and vox alikes (though the low efficiency 1x15 might project and cut a lot less than a pair of first rate celestion 12sike I sport in all my combos and enclosures)

buy it or don't buy it? I don't really have the money for it.... but..... but.....

I have been pIaying a lot of classic country kinda stuff and the pro is such a definitive western swing amp.... and I WAAAAANT IT! maybe I should borrow it and see if we bond for a couple weeks

EDIT: man what you couldn't do with just one amp and/or guitar from my hoard... want my hand-made ac4? I am bored with it and would sell it for 500 w/o the greenback (at a 30% discount its u to you to fin a suitable 16 ohm driver... I will include the vintage 50s Mullard ecc82 in V1, a tube that sells for about 30 bucks or more usually

You know, I was looking at the previous suggestions and I stopped by Blackstar's HT-5. It sounds good on paper, but I'm kind of scared the sound on that thing was recreated on the HT Dual, because even straight to a PA, I never like the distortion nor the crunch settings of that pedal. Kind of why I was seriously considering selling the damned thing for a Messner overdrive or something else.

there is so much misinformed nonsense thinking in this whole paragraph I don't know where to start

of course you didn't like it straight into the PA, that's just not how we are used to hearing guitars... speaker emulation is just NOT a dedicated speaker cab at the best of times (like the popular Palmer, H&K and Mesa units) and most of the time its just a lame EQ

no, your dual-triode powered dirt pedal is nothing like a full bore tube amplifier with a power tube and a speaker, maybe the topology around those triodes is similar in the amp and pedal (I doubt that) but there is nothing downstream of the pedal shaping frequency response and dynamics unless you put it there... all the parts in an amp interact and react to your playing in very complicated ways, just don't get me started.... try the amps mentioned, don't rule them out because of preconceived notions because you are totally ignorant of tube electronics so whatever is rattling around your ehad is probably false

I also don't think you should be dumping any pedals for other pedals (dumping them for an amp is another matter) since you don't know what any of them really sound like in a gig situation with an amplifier cutting over a band... you are confused, just pick an amp already, buy it as soona s you can swing it, and get out of your bedroom for the love of god.... fi you heard my sound in that environment you would go "that's bright and even a bit harsh, ugh! really Jim?" but in a band situation or even a recorded mix my tones cut well, don't eat the vocal and actually sound really sweet and complex. Youc an hear all the nuance of my playing in a crowded mix.

Who can help me read the markings on a vintage Fender neck?

its worth between to 2 and 3 thousand USD depending on condition, body color and the phases of the moon! It will go up though... when the economy was better it was worth an extra $500 to $1k easy.

I am not worried about any of it, not the 02 neck code, not the RA Friend name.... its not my guitar and its looks original to me.... and even f its not, if you aren't planning to sell it who cares?

right, its not a coincidence, because no 2 guys could think of the same stage name with a goofy spelling! Its just too clever, one of them STOLE IT!

there's a spinal tap scene where they say they were originally called "the originals" but they found out someone else was using that name so they became "the new originals," but I can't find a clip on youtube... needless to say that both the Insaynes in question are probably folding bologna up right now trying to fit it into tiny little bread:

could be someone at Fender back then but I have a feeling not since the stamp looks weird

its not a particularly desireable tele from a player's perspective, those were grim times at Fender, but its collectible and should be worth a lot
