Telecaster w/ humbucker and singlecoil

I don't know anything about ESPs recent guitars. I know they made good, affordable japanese super strats when iw as a kid and all the emtal guys left Jackson and Kramer and flipped to ESP starting with Kirk Hammet. I know they made the good gibson knockoffs udner the names Edwards and now those are less good and their good line of gibbies is Navigator. But these LTD guitars? dunno. I've only ever picked up on, a silver sparkle LP copy, and it had a wimpy little neck so I put it put it back down. I've enver seen their tele shape, just LPs, strats and pseudo-SGs... all of which remind me of every other recent far east-guitar.

Check out Reverend if you're trying to avoid an actual fender. i thnkk they're Korean but i've enver picked up a bad Reverend. They do a lot of interesting pickup combinations and have a billion shapes. I see in your profile that you're a Swedish metalhead... you may prefer a reverend to a more stock tele. Their Railhammer humbuckers are very popular with the heavy crowd right now. Look them up, for real. They're really innovative. Company was founded by Joe Naylor of Naylor amps. Pretty famous innovator.

In old guitars, in addition to their excellent les pauls, in the 70s and early 80s Tokai and Greco made awesome MIJ copies of vintage fender models and the teles don't command a lot of money. If you scan reverb or ebay you may find one of those vintage Tele Custom copies for cheap...

if you're into P90s as wella s humbuckers look for a fender aerodyne tele, i ahd oen for awhile and while it didn't do it for me it was an amazing player. I almost wish i ahd kept it just for the enck. It was the eprfect medium-roudned vitnage shape like my SG but not a baseballbat like some of my LPs.

I could go on. There are a million great teles out there, its an easy guitar to build right. And again YOU can build one to your spec. My favorite telecaster is a partscaster. I basically built a '58/59 spec from some fender parts with a custom made pickup set, rutters bridge and flipped controls.... sucker is better than all my factory fenders. Swear to god. All in I think i spent 700 USD and my labor time. Most of that was pickups and the lazer-cut bridge/saddle set. You don't HAVE to go insane with the best parts on the market...

go look at whats on my equipboard and you'll see I'm pretty serious about guitar trading, so I have played or owned pretty much every guitar I recommend. I've been doing this FOREVER.

SICK tone (U2 - Bullet The Blue Sky live)

prettys tandard.... sounds like a good strat into a cranked small tweed with some subtle effects and maybe a little push at the front end from a tuebscreamer, SD9 or even just the gain boost from one of his delay units could do it depending on where he has the single tone cotnrols et on the amp(s).... probably Edge's tremolux, deluxe, harvard or a mixture of them. An AC30 can do that with a strat too, but not on the top boost channel, not enough low mids there, but the normal channel does that to a strat too. SOunds more like a 2x6V6 tweed though.

I don’t like the finish on my guitar!!

but ow does your guitar feel about YOUR finish?

Telecaster w/ humbucker and singlecoil

70s style tele custom, its supposed to be a wide range humbucker, which is its own thing, but modern oens have a standard gibsons tyle humbucker in a wide range housing... look at the MIM classic series, they make a tele custom for udner a grand new and a lot cheaper used.

or build a partscaster, its easy to find painted bodies routed for a gibson hubucker, minibucker or gretsch fitlertron at the neck... also, go on reverb and search, lots of small buidler partscasters of high quality built to Keef spec with a lap-steel/broadcaster type bridge pickup and a PAF style humbucker at the neck in a 50s style tele build.

PS: the fitlertron pairs better with msot tele bridge pickups then a gibson style humbuggie... you want a really hot, early 50s bridge pickup to pair with a low output PAF or minibucker neck, the fitlertron is much lwoer output and is much brighter so it will mates very well with the lower-wind, alnico5 and ceramic magnet tele bridge pickups.

Ibanez Tube Screamer vs Tube Screamer Mini

I've owned lots of different TS variants including an original 9 series bought secondhand around 1993... it sounded different from msot of teh reissue 9s it was next to, the mini sounds more similar to the RIs than the original. This is an anal retentive, recordings tudio shootout comparison. in a abnd setting I find that an 808, 9, 10 5, reissuues, maxons, boutiques, whatever? they all sound pretty much the same. I think the best mass market boutique screamer type pedal without a doubt is the green rhino mkII (or later) since it has extra controls so you can dial it in to have the sbtle shading of almost any of the different versions... personally I prefer the SD1 and its relatives anymore. If you don't feel anal, get a mini, they sound like a tubescreamer. somewhere between a new TS9 and the soudtnank TS5 (a depal i always loved the sound of depsite it unrelaiable switch)... if I still played blackface fender amps I would still have my old ts9, but I gave it as a gift to my buddy who bought my oldest dual showman. He makes good use of both.

Fuzz pedals

for the millionth time on this site the big muff and its variants are NOT fuzz pedals, they work like an extreme distortion with 99% of the clipping you hear coming from a couple of back-to-back diodes to ground between stages. Its note ven that fuzzy if you put it next to an actual fuzz box that produces its distortion with transistors overloading eachother and crazy biasing arrangements. If you snip oen pair of diodes you get a supa tonebender which is like the msising link between fuzz and distortion. If you snip all of them it'll act like a buffered 3 stage fuzz witha tone control, sort of in the ballpark of a tonebender III or Burns Buzzaround... but elss fuzzy for a few reasons. plenty of gain in teh circuit to fuzz it up, but the design is not particularly fuzzy.

Want to experience EHX's ACTUAL fuzz design frm back then? Try a Muff Fuzz or the recent Double Muff which is 2 Muff Fuzzes in one box. But the Big muff is not a fuzz. its really a poor attempt at compressor/sustainer made by young guys who didn't udnerstand how comrpessors work yet when they started it so they acidentally made one of the first distortions.

By the way, try some non-big-muff fuzzes before you commit. I've ahd a lot of muffs (old ones, recent ones, boutique ones etc) and I have to say they aren't very useful apart from the studio, though there are a coupe things that only a muff will do (I just don't like them anymore). But try some fuzz faces and stuff... for real.

Truss rod

generally I do a quarter turn one way or another about twice a year based on the humidity... if you haven't adjusted it for eyars there's probably a cumualtive effect and that's why you need more drastic adjustment. You probably didn't notice it until recently and you were just tweaking your intonation around relief you couldn't feel yet. Once you can really feel it and your action is screwy you probably waited to long and its gone beyond seasonal maintenace... so more turning. Be slow, methodical and careful. If you hear weird noises at any point STOP

Updating official website and/or Facebook

is this a question or a statement... I enver noticed! why don't you tell em what you want to change and I'll see if my Mod powers can accomplish it. I cna do more drastic stuff then regular users, though not as much as the Admins.

Can I change an item's photo?

I know that I can change a photo... link me to a better photo of the BX8 and whatever else and I'll do it if Gchiaren's too busy.

8yover 8 years ago

Truss rod

google is assuming you're tweaking a guitar that's just slightly off because tis been set-up recently and that a change in the weather is responible for a slight bowing

8yover 8 years ago

Truss rod

go to warmoth.com, I believe they summarize different truss types than I ever could... lots of good info on that site in general

who's everybody? if the neck is still bowed then the truss is still too loose for the string gauge on the guitar. PERIOD so try a half turn and see where it gets you... if the relief is easily visible to the naked eye you elt this go awhile and it may take a full turn or more, but I would go icnrememntally over the course of a week. Start with the half turn, then move in quarters until its where you think its right... every otehr night before bed.

8yover 8 years ago

Truss rod

a quarter turn is negligible... once it resettles overnight you very well may not notice a difference. yes, clockwise is right

What string gauges does everyone use?

I'm gonna switch to D'Addario NYXL. When we tested them in the office we all loved them. I'll probably go with 9s.

for real? you liked them more than the elixirs you had me review? because I am really over the moon for these elixirs.

drummers with strings... just kidding.

What string gauges does everyone use?

10... 11 and 12 on acoustic... 11 when i do flatwound, but It end to mix an unwound 11 G i'm not limited to only jazz and early country styles

I'm too old for drop tunings. Drop D or tunign down to Eb to make things easier to sing as a dude were just coming into fashion when i w as picking up the guitar. The alternate tuing this like DADGAD was kidna in style in grunge and shoegave as I got older, but this whole post-tool, post-hardcore nu-metal downtuning thing didn't exist so i've never embraced it and never will. I guess it coems from sabbath, but Iommi was missing fingers and downtuned to get lower tension on his SG so it would be elss painful. upping the gauge is kidna missing the Iommi point isn't it?

at this point I think every oen of my electrics 9 a lot) has either ernie slinkies or the new Elixir Nanowebs int he same gauges as the ernies. I eventually will just be using all nanowebs by the crateful once I use up my ernie supply, all 10 gauge. Very happy with them.

Leonard Bernstein Introduces The Moog (1969)

I'd read about tis but enver actually saw the footage... I love Bernstein. Not my favorite conductor, but as a compsoer he did so much to reconcile 20th century poular music of all kinds with the european classical tradition and he gets short shrift for it outside of intellectual circles

Good and cheap synth? (max 500$)

I would advise everyone to wait on the Behringer for a while until we see how many waranty issues there are... same goes for the Deep Minds. Wait and see. A $300 Minimoog is cool indeed, but a $300 paper weight is not and Behringer is not known for build quality.

Noise gate question

'help' is a relative term and I would debate whether the inclusion of that gate is a 'pro', however to answer your question a gate will effect everything preceeding it... imagine a magic elf that mutes your signal whenever the input signal drops below a set volume, that's what a gate does. so anything being fed into the gate circuit as part of your signal whether its from the distortion circuit in the fig fumb or from pedals earlier in the chain? the gate effects and if its a good circuit that you've set up properly it will silence that noise when you stop playing. That said, if tis a true bypass pedal I would suspect that the gate disengages with the distortion circuit so unless you're stacking a bunch of dirt into the fig fumb the gate may be largely irrelevent in practice. Look up more about gating in general as a studioe ffect and then look up guitar gates. They are a polarizing topic because they really mutilate the shape of your attack and decay and can also be a tone suck if the detection circuit is not designed VERY well. Even in studio ahrdware there are a lot of gates that act as a double edged sword because of their tendency to change the frequency response of the soruce amterial. Software gates are far more pelasing then the average hardware gate.

New + suggestion

WELCOME!

1) there's a thread for introductions here.

2) your suggestion has been tabled by others prior to you joining, but we just recently saw the fully categorized "I have it" list implemented (and that took a while for the admins to get working), so you shouldn't expect a separate list for sold gear to materialize until the second half of this year or later. In the interim you might follow my policy of reviewing every piece of gear you've owned, used at a studio or borrowed for extended periods of time. Frankly that's good enough for me because I have owned so much junk at this point my list would be miles long. What you want to do is review the piece and when if it asks you if you want to add it to your board you choose not to. Alternately you can add it to your "have it" list, review it (you might want to mention in your review that it was sold/traded/broken) and then delete it from the list with little X mark.

Cheers!

Help with getting a head or large combo

I've enver paid much for a 1960 cab, they seem to go for real money anymore but they sued to trade for very little money hen iw as into 4x12s... now 1960TVs, 1980s and Mesa talls/ those I got gouged on, but I really always liked having some oversized cabs in my rig when I was playing the bigger spaces.

Help with getting a head or large combo

the sound quality difference between the quilter gear and soemthing like a marshall valvestate or MG is enormous.... you won't miss the extra controls. iw as shocked by how much i liked the quilter when i bought one. Just shocked. I bought it just to find out and thught I might return it, but tis a great sounding amp with an itnerface so simple you can't fuck it up.

Help with getting a head or large combo

quilter microblock 45, attach it to pedalbaord, buy a nice 2x12 cab... problem solved, total cost will be well under 500 USD unless you spring for a handmade cab with unobtainium vintage speakers in it.. I think you could get all in for 300 bucks if you go ooking for secondhand, off-brand cabs in the abck of stores or on craigslist. Not exactly as cheap as you're suggesting, but the shit will sound good.

Big Muff

if you want a smashing pumpkins type of tone, max out the sustain, set the tone a little on the treble side of things and set the volume at the middle. works well for that.

I actually don't think that's the Corgan/Iha siamese dream sound... if you search the itnernet the guy even explains it in a recent EHX video. Demosntrates the whole thing with that new op-amp big muff nano

Big Muff

try throwing it in the toilet for an hour while you're at the store auditioning pedals that cut through a band

8yover 8 years ago

Bernard Sumner Tone

its because he used a very rare vox amp, look it up. The Beatles and Jimmy Page also used them soemtimes. They're a hybrid design not unlike music man amps in conception with a solid state preamp with ltos of bells and whistles stapled to a very pwoerful, and fairly hifi tube power amp. Although the Vox UL amps sound WAY different than the music man HD amps.

Musical Curiosities

I had a DL4 but I broke it too easily and I went abck to rack units for delay effects... i ahd plenty around. Iw as taken with how much it did but the looper felt like mroe foa toy. the whole thing felt like a toy from build quality to what it did to ym dry signal... anyway. ia dha mixed imrpession of it. i think it created a 4 button 'multi-voice delay/looper station' pedal format that's replaced the rack units I favored after I swore off tape delay.

I dunno how accurate that is, there were a lot of loopers people were using for that groove stuff before the DL... I thought the combination of a modelling delay with 3 preset switches and tap WITH a basic looper was the influential part...
