Ace Kefford's Gear
From the performances of Ace during his time with The Move, he mainly sticks to one bass guitar, which is his Fender Precision Bass. It is observed that the Fender Precision is a 1966 model, as it has a slab body, as opposed to the more curved cut seen on standard Precision basses. Ace would remove the bridge pickup cover of the Precision (see Beat Beat Beat performances), and soon would remove the pickup cover as well (Fire Brigade TV performance on TOTP). Ace has performed numerous shows with the Fender Precision, from TV performances in TOTP, to live performances in Germany. It is unknown where the bass went after Ace Kefford left the band, but Trevor Burton replaced Ace on bass, in which he also played a Fender Precision bass.
In this rare picture of Ace, he is seen playing with a Harmony H22 Bass guitar, which he may use only for this specific performance. From what is recalled, Ace has never really used any other basses other than his Fender Precision, which is his main gear. This Harmony H22 bass may only be used as a back-up instrument, in case his Precision is used for service.
In the 1967 Beat-Club performance of "I Can Hear The Grass Grow," Ace Kefford of The Move is seen using a Klemt Echolette BS40 bass head. While most band members appear to be using Klemt Echolette Showstar heads paired with ET100 2x12 cabinets, one amp head in the lineup features a distinct knob configuration, identifying it as the BS40. Although Kefford did not own this amp, his performance delivers a notably snarly and punchy tone, enhanced by his Fender slab P-Bass with round wound strings.
The Move had a reunion performance in April of 1981. Featuring original members Bev Bevan, Roy Wood, and Ace Kefford. Ace is seen using a white fender musicmaster. The black pickgaurd on the white finish appears to strictly be a 1978 release. Ace is seen brandishing this bass outputting the classic bass tone of the move.
