Dennis Dunaway's Gear

This Rotosound advertisment, featuring Dennis Dunaway of the original Alice Cooper Band lineup reads:

"Legendary tone starts with authentic strings..."

"That's why Dennis Dunaway still uses Rotosound strings and why we continue to use the family-made machinery that wound the original Swing Bass 66 strings played on Alice Cooper's School's Out in 1972."

"The story goes that after fitting the strings for the first time, Dennis declared that he had to re-record his bass parts because he was so in love with his new Rotosound strings!"

In this photo, Dunaway can be seen holding his 1970 Fender Jazz Bass modified with a P-J pickup configuration, and adorned with sparkles, mirrors, and various different coins glued to the body and headstock, the same decorations Dunaway applied to the Bass himself in the '70s.

In these photos on the left, Dunaway can be seen preforming live with his modified 1969 Gibson EB-0, dubbed the "Frog Bass" for it's green color in addition to other reasons. This Bass was donated to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Museum many years later.

When asked about the Bass in an April 2017 issue of Vintage Guitar, Dunaway explained the instrument's odd finish coloration, as well as it's name origin:

[Vintage Guitar]: "What’s the story behind the Gibson EB-0 “Frog Bass,” which now resides at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum?"

[Dunaway]: "I bought that in 1969. I used model-car paint to spray it Emerald Green with a silver undercoat, then glued mirrors and Swarovski crystal rhinestones all over the body. I added a Fender Precision pickup in the bridge position. Cindy, my girlfriend at the time and now my wife of many years, always thought I looked like a frog when I smiled, so she gave it the nickname."
