Throughout his life, Hugo Chavez was an active promotor of the Venezuelan Cuatro, which was declared a "Cultural Heritage of the Nation" by the Institute of Cultural Patrimony during his tenure as the country's leader. He came to own many--often gifts from luthiers--occasionally performed with one for local news reporters, and commissioned the first mass manufacture of the instrument.
