Ian Underwood

Ian Underwood can be seen here playing a Gibson G-101 organ with the Mothers of Invention. Don Preston usually played this organ, but it's possible Ian also played it live or in the studio.

In a 2012 interview with Zappa’s Gear, George Duke mentioned Ian Underwood as having used an ARP 2600.

Once I started playing the synth, he actually borrowed an ARP 2600 and stuck it on my keyboard, and I took it home and tried to learn it, I talked to Ian Underwood about it and he gave me a few things, but it was just a little too heady for me.

Ian Underwood played the Whitney Studio Pipe Organ (listed in the credits as “Organus Maximus”) on Hot Rats, utilizing it on the tracks “Peaches En Regalia” and “Son Of Mr. Green Peaches”.

As Ian Underwood noted in his 1994 interview with Keyboardist Magazine, he used a Hammond organ while playing with Zappa, with the specific model identified by Zappa Gear as a B-3.

During the last period of time when I was with him, I was actually playing woodwinds more than anything else, but before that I played a lot on Hammond organ and ARP 2600.
