James Hetfield's Bass Guitars
In this Guitar World article detailing the techniques used by James Hetfield to record Sad But True, it says:
"Further depth and texture was added by overdubbing a Jerry Jones baritone tuned an octave lower than the guitar, while additional overdubs consisted solely of muted string “chuks” to enhance the percussiveness of the attack."
The article then goes on to specify the exact guitar used was a, "Jerry Jones Danelectro Longhorn baritone copy (bridge pickup)."
In a user-uploaded photo, James Hetfield is seen holding a 1979-1980 Spector NS-1 Bass in a studio setting. Despite the low quality of the image, both Hetfield and the bass are identifiable.
