Matthew Dear's Keyboards and Synthesizers
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this thing has a mind of its own. The more you push it, the more intelligent it gets. Whether you’re using it for drum patterns, or sample warping, you never end up anywhere near where you started.”
He says, "I was working on creating arpeggios and polyrhythms and working with the Waldorf PPG Wave soft synth, which I’ve never used before."
“Lately I’ve been using this more for the sample/hold-style warbled blips. It’s fun to get a completely random and mangled mess sampled, and then loop a section to base an entire song on.
"You can hear this in action at the end of my song Crimewaves, just before it goes into the little reprise at the end.”
He says, "The Korg PolySix has been my staple for a long time. Songs like ‘Her Fantasy’ on Beams – the synthesiser line on that is a PolySix arpeggio. ‘You Put A Smell On Me’ from Black City is the PolySix."
He says, "i can’t get away from the Moog Voyager for bass sounds. "
He says, "Yeah. It’s not only the knobs and the physical nature of it but just the sound and the randomness of hardware. Analogue circuitry sounds so much better. Warmer and bigger."
