Rick McCollum's Gear
The transcribed interview at the link above is from a May 1996 interview with Afghan Whigs Greg Dulli and Rick McCollum. Search "Jazzmaster" and, about 1/5 the way down the article Rick mentions, "[I play] Two Jazzmasters, a purple and a brown." In pics of Rick at the time (~1996 -- as well as current), it shows the "purple" guitar being an off-purple and, most likely, this "Burgundy Mist" color. In this archived Guitar World article from around the release of the ‘Black Love’ LP, in 1996, McCollum talks about his exclusive use of a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec:
“RICK MCCOLLUM: Two Jazzmasters, a purple and a brown. We both play through Mesa Dual Rectifiers. Those are the only amps, as far as I'm concerned.”
McCollum also states that his recording and live rigs are identical.
In this archived Guitar World article from around the release of Afghan Whigs ‘Black Love’ LP in 1996, McCollum talks about his pedals:
“I have a Pro Co. Rat distortion pedal and three old Big Muffs, which are so delicate that I can't use them much anymore. And a purple delay pedal. I don't know what kind.”
His indication that these are “old” would identify them as not being the (then) contemporary Sovtek Russian-made Big Muff pedals.
He also states that his live and recording rigs are identical: “ We use the same setup in the studio as we do for our live shows”.
