Yngwie Malmsteen's Studio Equipment
From a diagram in a March 2001 issue of Guitar One magazine detailing Yngwie Malmsteen's live gear setup during his 2000 Nov./Dec. USA tour with Dio, his on-stage gear includes the Roland PK5 Dynamic MIDI Pedal.
"I started using this to make noise with," Malmsteen says at (5:45) in reference to his Roland DC-20 Analog Echo.
"What happened was, for 12 years I always used a keyboard player and a drum programmer for my Roland R-8 MKII, which is a bitchin’ drum machine! The keyboard player and I had a falling out and I wound up sitting in my studio all alone. I was writing songs like “Stronghold” and “Attack” — good riffs if I may say so. But I felt there was something missing, so I went to the store and what did I do? I bought a guitar synth because I just wanted to hear what it would sound like if a keyboard player like Derek Sherinian or someone who could play some interesting stuff on there. Reason being, I didn’t have somebody with me. I just wanted to add something that would help me come up with vocals and lyrics. I write all that stuff. I write every thing, you know? So that is how I use the GR-33."
According to Boss' diagram, Malmsteen uses (or at least used) the Roland JV-1080 synth.
At 5:55 , while he is talking about his crybaby pedal, the camera pans over his pedalboard where you see a MasterMind controller.
Preset two splits the two stacks in stereo. One side is totally dry and the other side has all the delay, so they won’t interfere with each other. I really love that effect its very cool. You can do little improvised fugues and stuff. The delay is a Korg DL-8000R. The third preset is very bizarre, with a dry signal on one side and a delayed signal thats an octave lower on the other side. So the octave divider comes only on the echo feed and when I play with the volume knob for swells, it sounds like a violin and a cello together.
The fourth preset is an octave higher up, using a TC Electronic G-Force. I only do that to annoy people.
