Premier Guitar captioned the second photo of Van Halen's 2012 performance at the Bridgestone Arena: "His pedalboard features[...] an RJM MasterMind MIDI footcontroller (bottom middle)[...]"
"I use this one here and just keep it in my drawer, and I stand here and tune and change buttons because it's patched in remotely to the one out on the stage. But the buttons were too close here for Dan because he's singing and not really looking down there. I had a custom one made of stainless steel by a fabricator in Akron. It's all designed to keep the buttons spaced out. So once the box was built it was shipped to Ron Minelli at RJM, and he made custom electronics to fit inside of it based on the design I gave him, which is pretty much the same as the RJM," says Dan Auerbach's guitar tech about the RJM MasterMind MIDI Foot Controller.

"I got so tired of missing cues, trying to push pedals at the right time. The sounds were often not exactly right, or properly balanced, with good gain staging. So I have an RJM Mastermind that controls the RJM MIDI Effects Gizmo [loop switching station] and handles all my pedals. Two of them are MIDI-capable Eventide pedals, and the Mastermind also controls their parameters. My keyboard player controls the whole pedalboard remotely, through MIDI. That way I no longer have to click pedals left and right and pray that the gain staging is correct. This helps me play complicated guitar parts, sing, and be invested in the performance— it allows me to be a performer instead of a pedal tweaker and a shoe gazer."
