Zach Sutton's Gear
In a live performance of "Buttercup" at Bonnaroo 2017, Zach Sutton of Hippo Campus plays a Fender American Elite Jazz Bass® V. When asked about his choice of a five-string bass, Sutton simply responded, "Why not?"
Throughout the video you can see he's playing the Viola Bass.

This has been Zach's main bass since the beginning of his career as a bassist. He can be seen everywhere and almost anywhere with it online and live in concert. Here in Hippo Campus' most popular youtube video (at the moment) you'll see him playing it throughout the entire video, first glace at the 0:15 timestamp.
Even though he is known to use this bass more frequently than all his others, he's not known to be a 5 string bass player, this bass is the only 5 string he's owned and when asked why he uses mainly uses this, even though all his other seen basses are of only 4 strings, he replies with "Why not"
At 1:04, when he steps away from his pedals you can see the muff pi on the left side.

Zach Sutton has been recently spotted playing a 1978 Fender Precision Bass Natural, which appears to be modified with vintage P-90 soapbar pickups, as shown in a user-uploaded photo on Tumblr.
This bass was used back in Zach's previous band before Hippo Campus, "Whistle Kid" while they were still in high school. He's never seen with it nowadays, but it was one of his main basses back then, other than the 5 string Jazz Bass he's known for using still today.
