belated congrats, well played (or well programmed)young sir

where did you go to art school?

thanks, not really into disclosing too much personal info but its a uh a ok school.

Congrats man! For those of us who don't know (including myself), how will this propel your career? Where will you go from here (label, selling your music yourself etc.)?

well it has increased both mp3 sales and streaming / ad revenue by 100% this month. (I don't think that alone did it though.)

other than that I think it's good branding to just have my name in a key spot for four days in a row let it burn into peoples minds a little.

I don't think it'll do too much else now because the momentum is dying down, so from now its just a nice credential for my portfolio.

I've gotten accolades in visual art a couple times

Is there somewhere I could see your stuff? Actually wait, that was stupid, you more than likely did all you album art and other stuff by yourself. Also, congratulations.

thanks, and i dont think its a stupid question cus I do have a portfolio http://grahamphisher.com/

Whorse, this is VERY cool! Congrats, it's a big stepping stone for sure to get that recognition.

For those that don't know, Spinnin' Records is one of the "big guys" when it comes to house/edm/etc record labels. Here's the link to their Talent Pool, with our main man Whorse at the top :)

Whorse, how'd you manage that? I'm sure some of our community members would love to hear how you went about it. How'd you get your track out there and get votes?

I just listened to it, it's really solid, nice work. That vocal sample is great, as is your sound selection. Nice work on the mixing as well, sound nice and balanced to me. You've got a nice collection of gear... what are some of the main tools (synths) you used for this track?

Thank's means a lot

as for promo, well I'm really into marketing, I do a lotta lil things to promote myself, for example here's one I did using parody law, I created a fake music festival and ran advertisements for it, like this one,

http://i.imgur.com/S4mspMH.jpg

all the names are mispelt in a funny way except mine (thus protecting me under parody law), but anyways when I was raving and stuff, I noticed a big way a lotta people learn about new artists are from flyers like the one above, so with facebook's very precise way of shaping the demographic you want the ad to appear to, 30$ goes a long way, and a lotta people saw my name next to all these other big artists. (most people didn't even realize the names were mispelt and even shared the ad for the festival on their own pages and tagged friends. on the actual ad I had it in mp4 not jpg like above, so my music played with a lil animation)

so like I do a lotta lil stuff like that to pick up traffic, than once you have a following run another ad for like 10 bucks letting friends / fans know "only takes 2 seconds to sign up, (you can use your facebook account) and help me out by voting for my new track"

as for the gear, I used a moog minitaur (bass), korg ms20 (lead), novation bass station (mix in / break / mix out bass), ni massive (drop stabs), and refx nexus (Brass)

I've gotten accolades in visual art a couple times but this is my first musical one, ranked #1 / gold out of 10,000 submissions on the largest "edm based" label's talent pool for my track "Into You".

http://grahamphisher.com/photos/WhorseIntoYouArt.jpg

My next goal is to get on Soundcloud's top 50 chart during summer. (school kinda takes up a good chunk of time right now) would be nice if it happened with this compilation I'm gonna put out, a 30+ minute mix / set of 14 un-released tracks I spent the last 6 months working on.

idk about "no more eurorack" but I like the concept.

Just something I was fiddling with earlier

I loathe headphones for mixing and you're the only professional I talk to who uses them for anything but a check of special stereo effects. Then again you're the only electronic musician I talk to, everyone else I know is recording live music which is what I learned on. Is it that headphones are a DJ tthing?

no not because its a dj thing, thatd be a very shallow reason :) . i'm just curious what headphones have you tried to mix on, and have you truly given them a fair chance.

i'll'uh splain'uh more'uh when'uh i'uh get'ah back'ah

going to walk my dog.

Just something I was fiddling with earlier

'proper monitoring equipment'

unless you are mixing in a purpose built room or one that has been carefully treated with corner traps, diffusers and maybe auralex on the ceiling if the ceiling is low then even the same pair of monitors Whorse is using will present differently in his room then in yours.... too much emphasis is placed on speaker selection by young guys, scientifically your mix environment is way more important than your playback system, even something as simple as speaker positioning has a more drastic effect on how you mix then choosing NS10s over some 3 way Ureis

in short, we're never going to hear the exact same things unless we all get together in the same room to listen together, plus we have different ears and brains so who knows what will poke out at each of us

I had some revelatory experiences as a young buck watching some really amazing engineers dial up incredible sounding mixes on some ghetto speakers in untreated home studios that translated incredibly well to EVERY system I checked them on... since then I've had a real 'it just doesn't matter' mentality and have striven to be able to give a track a good balance whether I have a fancy control room with lots of monitoring options, an SSL and tons of great outboard gear or I am listening quietly on some prosumer direct fieldsand just using the native plugins that come with fruityloops.

kmon jim all that goes without saying, but all i'm saying is if he had some decent monitors with decent placement, we would probably get a more honest look at his mix, and so would he, you can't deny that. don't encourage him to work on multimedia speakers where the sound is made like 200% wider and "enhanced".

10yabout 10 years ago

Just something I was fiddling with earlier

idk if anyone can give you mixing advice because chances are your hearing something completely different than what we're hearing because your not using proper monitoring equipment.

it's never too early to start good mixing practices, so here's my headphone recommendations for mixing sorted by price range, idk what kinda budget you'd have for this

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x ($50) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ATHM20x

never mixed on these, but have compared them to their older brother the athm50x which I mix on all the time and they sound pretty damn close in quality, but if I had a limited budget I'd go for these.

Sennheiser HD 280 ($100) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HD280Pro

used these when getting my certifications for pro tools, mixes translated pretty well from headphone to monitors.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x ($150) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ATHM50x

my favorite headphones for writing and mixing, note tho, highs can come off a little metallically which can make the highs sound higher than they really are, its not a problem just as long as your aware and test the mix on multiple other devices every now and then.

Shure SRH1440 ($300) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SRH1440

while the ATH-M50x's are my favorite to mix and write, these headphones sorta feel like I'm looking at the mix with a magnify glass, and tweaking and perfecting little mixing errors. note these are not fun headphones, they are very flat and honest.

10yabout 10 years ago

Just something I was fiddling with earlier

jim im sure you give headphones enough time, you can learn do a decent mix with them, than go to monitors to get your spacial mix right. i bounce back and forth constantly when mixing, and I feel like sometimes headphones give me a more personal / magnified look at the mix.

and there are some ear buds you can mix on designed specifically for monitoring from shure and audio technica that you should check out, at my friend's studio when we would work on a track together, we'd have wireless "in ears" so we can still hear the mix during smoke breaks (i dont smoke anymore), plus was a good way to take a break from the monitors, and look at the mix from another perspective.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

We used to have a moderation proccess, but EquipBoard grew way too quickly and the ratio between users submitting to moderators was too high.

Here's an easter egg: check an artist page. Notice there's two tabs on the top just below the photo? One says "Pending Submissions". Click it. It's a remnant of the old EB (which admittedly is not that old).

I'd also like to point out to you lot that it's 0055 hours here. With that said, I should sleep.

bah... i'd never sacrifice quality because of growth.

10yabout 10 years ago

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

I didn't even read that carefully, jeez, can we keep kids off the internet, please?

there should be a moderation process for reviews, cus yea i've seen a few like that too, and if that's the page someone lands on from a search engine result, its not a good look at all for the site.

10yabout 10 years ago

Just something I was fiddling with earlier

I'm not sure either actually.the mixing changes, because some I did with my shitty poundland earphones, and some I did with my computer speakers.

in my opinion

u need to invest in some headphones or monitors, trying to do music without proper monitoring equipment is like selling drugs with a broken scale. there are some great headphones for monitoring tht only cost around 50-200 if u want links....... hell even some 12 dollar pairs from behringer

its pointless for anyone to give you mixing advice at the moment, we can only appreciate the concepts of your work.

Duplicate items?

the "K-25m Keyboard Unit" is a separate item entirely away from the JP-08 module (including the ju-06 and jx-03).

so if anything there is no keyboard edition of the jp-08, the k25m is just a controller / accessory.

K-25m

http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/K25M-large.jpg

jp-08

http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/JP08-large.jpg

and to add on, even if there was a "keyboard edition" and "module edition" they should still be listed as two different items.

Most commonly used EDM effects?

pretty coo, nce lil marketing technique for the site, would be coo to some samples from specific types of gear, like live drums, analog samples, and all tht kinda stuff, sorta driving home the whole unique selling point of equipboard "show case of gear" than with the soundcloud extension "the sounds of the gear". would be nice for seo.

10yabout 10 years ago

Most commonly used EDM effects?

just a whole lotta side chaining not to just whole channels but certain bands within channels so I can get the most outta every sound its a certain technique doesn't have a name yet that I know of but I call it frequency priority, I designed a flstudio mix template of it that I sell to other producers for $150, the hook "the only mixing you'll have to do when it comes to house music is adjust the channel levels, or sometimes click activate on some plugins if you want to change the sound up." people seemed pleased and I'm decently happy with how the mixes turn out, nice thing is you can just jump into writing.

n I have a few channel presets I designed for fl studio using native plugins that act as a mod matrix for my analog synths which allow me to get a lotta the wild crazier sounds u hear with a lotta soft synths in edm / dance music today. my mentor (a award winning audio engineer) that i use to go raving with for like 6 months told me to never get analog cus I wouldn't be able to get certain sounds but with this digital mod matrix technique I proved him wrong.

those are the only things I really think are unique about what i do, I still very much just think of myself as a student.

Most commonly used EDM effects?

I do the same thing with my supporting drums and repetitive vocals. Thts trick to the cut off filter you gotta work the res too, thts something a lotta people who do house today are missing which made house back in the 90's and early 2000 great, they just set the res in one spot and work the cutoff, you don't get that pulled from water / mud vibe.

N yea I'll sometimes throw a delay in too (a synced one tho.), only time I use un-sync is to breathe a lil more life into the environment processed into a channel with a wider stereo image.

I've never tried tht noise technique your talking about, I'mma have to give tht a try when I get some down time.

and I just read your second post too, imma throw tht into a list of things to do too.

10yabout 10 years ago

Most commonly used EDM effects?

That's great whorse thanks for sharing!

I found a cool riser I had laying around, what's a good site to host a small .wav file? One where I can just upload it directly without it being reprocessed or converted?

your welcome.

soundcloud, now soundcloud whenever someone plays it, itll play back as a converted mp3, idk what the current kbps is right now but last time I checked its 128.

BUT. heres the deal when you enable downloads for the file, the user will download your wav file and it will be un touched. they only created a 128kpbs copy for playback.

(which works perfect for me, I like to inject the ID3 / mp3 meta info to the fullest w/ hq art adds at least 2-3mb, it leads a lotta people back tho who dl'd onto their phones.)

if you just get a lil side account on there just for hosting samples you can fit a lot on a free account.

10yabout 10 years ago

But yea ableton (thumbs up)

pretty coo man, enjoyable, i like the xylophone, and your first track is coo too.

your really young and i just think the concepts are there for you, just over time as you learn to mix better your really gonna be able to breathe life into your work. feedback? id say work on your levels and apply compression to your drums.
