Guitars used by Alex Turner on Everything You've Come To Expect (Deluxe Edition)

Solid Body Electric Guitars

Ovation Viper Electric Guitar

Avg price: $850.00

Alex Turner uses an Ovation Viper Electric Guitar built by the Ovation Guitar Company when playing with both Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets, the Viper was seen being played during the “Humbug” tour and the Puppet’s “Everything You’ve Come To Expect” tour. When playing the Viper during the “Humbug” tour, Alex switched between this and one of his Jazzmasters, either his Fender or Custom Warmoth, replacing his Fender Bronco that he used during the bands second tour.

When Alex is playing the guitar with the Puppets, he has the guitar tuned so it's a whole step down in D Tuning, also called One Step Lower, Whole Step Down, Full Step or D Standard. Each string is lowered by a whole tone or two semitones, resulting in D-G-C-F-A-D. For "Aviation” and "Element of Surprise,” the guitar is used open so it’s in D. Turner uses a capo on the 2nd fret for when the band covers The Beatles "I Want You(She’s So Heavy)" so he can play the chords like the guitar is in standard tuning.

The Ovation Viper is an electric guitar made by Ovation Guitar Company from 1977 to the early 1980s. The Viper sports two single coil pickups, a single volume knob, a single tone knob and a three-way selector switch, very much like a Fender Telecaster. Ovation made their own pickups and they designed these to have a higher output than a regular single coil. They were also well-shielded and had very little hum when plugged in.

Pictured is Alex Turner during The Last Shadow Puppets show at T In The Park in 2016 seen playing his vintage Ovation Viper.

Solid Body Electric Guitars

ESP E-II ST 2

Avg price: $2,442.84

In the official video for "Bad Habits" by The Last Shadow Puppets, Alex Turner is seen playing an ESP E-II ST 2 guitar. However, in an interview, he mentioned that he does not own the guitar; it was used during a spontaneous performance at a bar, utilizing the house band's instruments.

Steel-string Acoustic Guitars

Martin D-12-20

Avg price: $1,750.00

In this photo in the booklet for the Last Shadow Puppets album "Everything You've Come to Expect," Turner can be seen playing a Martin D-12-20.

Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars

This is Miles Kane's Gibson. Alex can be seen playing the ES in the album notes for The Last Shadow Puppets - Everything You've Come to Expect. Alex also used it sporadically on the first Last Shadow Puppets tour.

Effects Pedals used by Alex Turner on Everything You've Come To Expect (Deluxe Edition)

Wah Pedals

Morley Classic Wah

Avg price: $99.52

Alex Turner used the Morley Classic Wah is his pedalboard during The Last Shadow Puppet’s Everything You’ve Come To Expect tour. Pictured here on Turner’s pedalboard, this pedal is not the other Morley Wah he used during Arctic Monkey’s Humbug tour, which was the Morley Pro Series II.

Described as “ Designed to emulate the timeless Morley tone of '70s and '80s wahs, this Classic model sports an electro-optical foundation with a diehard steel chassis” Turner uses this pedal on Everything You’ve Come To Expect on songs such as “Pattern” to get that vintage 70’s sounding Wah sound.

Fuzz Effects Pedals

Wattson Classic Electronics SuperFuzz

Alex Turner uses a Wattson Super Fuzz FY-6 on his board during The Last Shadow Puppet’s second tour of their Everything You’ve Come To Expect album. Turner has also used this pedal during the recording of Arctic Monkey’s Humbug recording sessions at Rancho De La Luna. Pictured the Wattson Super Fuzz can be seen on Turners board next to his Boss Tuners.

Capturing the precise tone of the original classic fuzz pedals from shin-ei and univox, the Wattson Super Fuzz fy-6 is housed in a 16 gauge steel chassis. Turner used this pedal on songs such as “Aviation” to get a vintage sounding Fuzz tone.

Switch Effects Pedals

Fender Vibrato & Reverb Footswitch

Avg price: $53.42

Alex Turner can be seen using a Fender Vibrato & Reverb Footswitch during The Last Shadow Puppet’s “Everything You’ve Come To Expect” tour, hooked up to his Fender Twin Reverb. During this tour Alex used two amps, one being his mentioned Fender and an Acoustic 160 stack. Both amps ran into a Morley ABY foot-switch on his pedalboard so he could run both amps at the same time or separately. This Vibrato & Reverb Footswitch ran separately from the rest of his pedalboard, running from the back of the Fender’s designated reverb/vibrato switch rather than in chain with the rest of the pedalboard. The Fender Vibrato & Reverb Footswitch can be seen pictured next to Turner’s MXR Micro Amp.

Direct Boxes

Radial J48 Direct Box

Avg price: $237.55

Alex Turner uses a Radial J48 1-channel Active 48v Direct Box during The Last Shadow Puppet’s “Everything You’ve Come To Expect” tour. Alex uses this J48 to increase the headroom of his amplifiers without compromising sound quality. With such vintage gear, specially Turner’s Acoustic 160 stack, using the J48 allows him to drive the amp while delivering the pure and natural sound of the instrument.

The Radial J48 is an active direct box that has been specifically designed to work around the limited current that is available with 48-Volt phantom power, and do so while delivering the pure and natural sound of the instrument. A unique switch-mode supply steps up the internal rails to allow an input signal of up to 10V without any noticeable distortion. The single most important development goal of the Radial J48 was increasing the headroom without compromising sound quality. To this end, every possible effort was made to deploy the limited energy resources of phantom power to the audio signal path. To begin, phantom power is converted using a super-efficient digital switch-mode power supply that steps up the internal rail voltage to an impressive 10 volts. This allows one to hit the J48 with as much as 9-Volts without choking! To further increase available horsepower, all non-essential devices such a power-hungry LEDs are turned off when the J48 is in use. A typical LED requires almost as much current as does the complete audio circuit.

Pictured is Alex Turner during a show in 2016 during The Last Shadow Puppets second albums tour. The Radical J48 Direct Box can be seen next to his Boss Tuner and Watson Fuzz.
