Alex Webster's Gear

I didn’t have the money at the time to get that Spector, but there was a Modulus that was actually less expensive. I went to the guy at the music store and I said, “Man, I don’t think I can afford one of these American-made Spectors right now.” He said, “Try this Modulus out, it’s also good for the kind of metal you’re playing.” I tried out a Modulus Quantum 5 and asked if I could get it in black. I used that one from 1996 until just a few years ago. It never really recorded quite as well as I wanted. It sounds great live but we always had to do more EQing than I liked in the studio.

"Signal Chain- Spector Euro5LX, Seymour Duncan Studio Bass Compressor, Darkglass B7K, to Interface"

"My tone, I wouldn't say it's like one of those heavily distorted really fuzzy tones. It's almost like a really aggresive clean tone. It's not super distorted or anything. It give it an extra attack to it. The circuit in the B3K, B7K, and B7K Ultra is something I've been using for quite a few years."

"I wanted to improve on the sound I already have established, and also make the pickups a bit easier to work with in terms of output level. I’ve had a problem over the years getting a completely clean signal out of my basses without having to turn the volume down on the bass itself. Optimizing the output level of the pickup seemed like a great way to resolve that issue – might as well start at the beginning of the signal chain, rather than try and fix things somewhere further down the line.

So I’m super excited with what the guys at Duncan came up with for me. Now I have pickups that work perfectly with my style, and I can crank the level on the bass all the way and the tone is still tight, punchy, and powerful. Also, somehow they managed to add more clean low end than I had before, a welcome bonus for sure. The pickups turned out amazing, I couldn’t be happier."
