About

Absent Friends was an Australian supergroup formed in the late 1980s, featuring a lineup of accomplished musicians from various well-known bands. The band was founded by Sean Kelly of the Models and included Wendy Matthews on vocals, marking the beginning of her successful solo career. Other members included James Valentine on saxophone, Andrew Duffield on keyboards, Gary Beers from INXS on bass, Michael King on guitar, and John MacKay on drums. Known for their blend of new wave and pop rock, Absent Friends captured the spirit of the era with their dynamic compositions and engaging live performances. Their sole album, Here's Looking Up Your Address, produced several hits, with "I Don't Want to Be with Nobody But You" achieving significant chart success.

How to Sound Like Absent Friends

Absent Friends' sound is characterized by energetic pop rock melodies and the smooth integration of saxophone and keyboards, giving their music a rich, layered texture. The band's style balances clean guitar lines with the warmth of analog instruments, creating a harmonious and inviting sonic atmosphere. The use of a Matchless HC-30 Guitar Amp Head by James Valentine contributes to the crisp yet full-bodied guitar tones that are a hallmark of their sound. Dynamic bass lines, courtesy of Gary Beers and his Steinberger L2, add rhythmic depth, while Matthews' vocals provide a soulful and evocative contrast. The music of Absent Friends is both nostalgic and timeless, with a polished yet emotive vibe that musicians can emulate by focusing on blending pop sensibilities with expressive instrumental layers.
