In this "Rig Rundown" video for Premier Guitar, James breaks down his extensive pedal board by first explaining that the "strangest thing about this is that I’m running through the Matchless head and the Divided by 13 head at the same time." James has both pedals set up next to each other so that he can switch between a clean channel and a dirty channel at the same time.

During the late stages of Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane touring cycle, James used bandmate Jesse Carmichael’s black Fender Telecaster Deluxe. He can be see playing the guitar on the band’s 2005 live album and DVD ’Live - Friday the 13th’.

“That black Tele Deluxe was actually Jesse’s and the headstock cracked all the way down to the neck… [laughs] It was an old guitar and I’ve been looking for a good Deluxe since we retired that one from the road. I just really like the Deluxe because it has the best of both worlds—it cuts through the mix and it is so warm.”

James used a Divided by 13 FTR 37 throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. He can be seen using it in the music video for “If I Never See Your Face Again” (2008). He used a mix of a Matchless Independence 35 head and a Divided by 13 FTR 37 head to achieve his guitar tone on the ‘Hands All Over’ tour between 2010 and 2011.
