About

Bad Astronaut is an American indie rock band with a touch of skate punk and punk influences, originating from Santa Barbara, California. The group is led by Joey Cape (vocals, guitar), also known for his work with Lagwagon. The lineup initially included Marko 72 (bass) from Nerf Herder and Sugarcult, and Derrick Plourde (drums), who had ties with Swingin' Utters and Lagwagon. Over time, Bad Astronaut expanded to include members like Angus Cooke (cello, guitar, percussion), Todd Capps (piano), Thom Flowers (guitar), and Jonathan Cox (programming). Their music is characterized by a blend of polished indie rock with mature and complex arrangements, appealing to fans of melodic pop-punk and introspective rock.

How to Sound Like Bad Astronaut

Bad Astronaut's music is defined by polished yet emotionally resonant soundscapes, fusing the raw intensity of punk with the melodic depth of indie rock. Their sonic character is rich and layered, often employing a combination of clean and slightly overdriven guitar tones. Joey Cape's preference for the Gretsch G6129TAU Sparkle Jet Electric Guitar contributes to the band's shimmering and dynamic sound. The warm, resonant vocal delivery is frequently captured using the Shure SM58, ensuring clarity and presence in their recordings. Percussion and cello add unique textures, crafting an expansive yet intimate atmosphere, while programming and piano elements provide a modern touch that enriches their musical landscape without overpowering their punk roots.
