About
Bad Lieutenant is a British alternative rock band formed in 2007 by Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order fame. The group also includes Phil Cunningham (guitar) and Jake Evans (vocals, guitar), with contributions from Stephen Morris on drums and Alex James from Blur during recording sessions. Known for their Madchester roots, Bad Lieutenant channels the energetic and danceable elements of late '80s and early '90s British rock, fused with the melodic sensibilities and electronic influences of Sumner's previous projects. Their debut album, Never Cry Another Tear, captures this blend of guitar-driven rock and electronic textures.
How to Sound Like Bad Lieutenant
Bad Lieutenant's sound is characterized by a clean, melodic guitar approach paired with rhythmic bass lines that reflect their Madchester heritage. The use of Shergold Masquerader and Gibson ES-335 guitars provides a rich, resonant tone that is both warm and articulate. Amplifiers like the Vox AC30 contribute to a classic, chiming sound that complements the band's dynamic range. The inclusion of electronic elements is subtle yet impactful, with the Moog Source synthesizer adding depth and texture. The interplay of melodic guitar lines with driving bass and drums creates a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-looking, maintaining an energetic yet polished vibe.
