About

Big Audio, initially known as Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.), is an eclectic musical group founded by Mick Jones after his departure from The Clash. Emerging from the vibrant London music scene, the band was originally composed of Mick Jones (vocals, guitar), Don Letts (effects, vocals), Greg Roberts (drums), Dan Donovan (keyboards), and Leo "E-Zee Kill" Williams (bass). They are celebrated for their genre-blending sound that combines elements of electronic, rock, hip hop, new wave, and alternative dance. Their experimental approach integrates samplers, dance rhythms, and found sounds with conventional rock structures, creating a pioneering fusion that resonates with diverse audiences.

How to Sound Like Big Audio

Big Audio's sound is characterized by its dynamic and textural layering, where rhythmic drive meets melodic exploration. The group's music often features crisp, punchy beats juxtaposed against ambient, swirling synths and effects, crafting a sound that is both energetic and atmospheric. The use of the Roland RE-201 Space Echo by Mick Jones contributes to their signature delayed and reverberant guitar tones, while the Yamaha QX-1 sequencer adds a complex, electronic dimension to their arrangements. The interplay between traditional rock instruments and electronic gear like the MXR Flanger creates a soundscape that is at once innovative and familiar, inviting musicians to explore bold combinations of rhythm and texture to capture their distinctive vibe.
