About

Devo is an influential American band known for their innovative blend of electronic, new wave, and post-punk music, originating from Akron, Ohio. Formed in the early 1970s, the group was founded by art school students Mark Mothersbaugh (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Gerald Casale (bass, vocals), who developed the concept of "de-evolution" as a satirical critique of modern society. They were joined by Bob Mothersbaugh (guitar, vocals), Bob Casale (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Alan Myers (drums), forming a lineup that became known for their unique sound and theatrical live performances. Devo's music often features jerky, robotic rhythms and quirky, satirical lyrics, making them stand out in the new wave scene.

How to Sound Like Devo

Devo's sound is characterized by its mechanical precision and quirky, angular melodies, often juxtaposed with a sense of offbeat humor and social commentary. Their music combines synth-driven textures and punk rock energy, creating a distinctive, futuristic vibe. Key to their sonic character is the use of synthesizers like the Moog Memorymoog and Suzuki Omnichord OM-27, which add a layered, electronic dimension. The band's guitar work, featuring instruments like the Fender Stratocaster, is often processed through effects like the Boss DS-1 Distortion, contributing to their sharp, biting sound. With an approach that blends experimental soundscapes and catchy, rhythmic hooks, Devo's music is both avant-garde and accessible, appealing to fans of punk, electronic, and alternative rock.
